Alexandria Obstetrics & Gynecology (El Shatby Hospital) Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Alexandria Faculty of Medicine El-Shatby University Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynecology was opened in 1955.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was founded in The Old Main University hospital. Then when El-Hadra (Nariman) University Hospital joined the Faculty of Medicine in 1951 a new Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was set, headed by Professor Hussein Toppozada and remained there till the building of El-Shatby hospital in 1955. In February 1979 the ultrasound was used for the first time. In December 1979 a unit for the newborns was opened in the hospital. Then the number of hospital beds reached 254 beds in 1986 and the unit of neonates increased to 40 beds. The first center for family planning was founded in the early 70s. Few years later a center for blood transfusion was held in the hospital and became the most important and largest blood bank in Alexandria and provides services to all hospitals in the region. In 1990 the 3rd floor was built to increase the hospital capacity to 376 beds and an intensive care unit was set with a capacity of 5 beds.
