That used to be a quite sensitive and painful subject for me. Thanks God, I was not in the place or in a body that could develop long term substance addiction - we are only given what we can handle, right? - but I struggled with divers others types of addictions : mostly affective and food. Maybe alcohol also but when you’re French you can’t tell 😅
My point is : any type of addiction is an escape for your system to avoid feeling pain (even smoking, yes). Each one of us will have his/her unconscious « good reasons » Meanwhile on short term it does bring some relief, in long term remember that processing this pain will actually bring you to a higher, deeper, more beautiful level of happiness and joy. Addictions are here to « help you » to pass through the moment, your brain needs them to continue to function « normally ». Is it a sustainable system? It doesn’t matter for the brain as it works on short term « survive » system.
What you will need to try to do, is to transform the patterns so your brain does not need the addictions anymore.
