Field Epedimiology Training Program The E-FETP was the second in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

The Egyptian Field Epidemiology Training Program (E-FETP) is a competency-based training and service program in applied epidemiology and public health that builds the core competencies of public health epidemiologists in communicable disease surveillance and response. FETPs have been modeled and developed in many countries worldwide after the success of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) that was first created by CDC in 1951. Since 1980, CDC has helped establish 55 programs that have trained more than 3,100 graduates from 72 countries. Approximately 80% of graduates work in government in their home countries and many fill leadership positions in the public health systems. It started in 1993, in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease control and Prevention. In 2000, the program's success led to the establishment of the Epidemiology & Surveillance Unit (ESU) which is responsible for disease surveillance, outbreak investigation & response, training, and the development of the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS). Now FETP is a principle component of the ESU in the Ministry of Health (MOH). Up to year, 2015, 17 cohorts of total 107 officers have been graduated and now provide essential epidemiologic services to the country. E-FETP works in close collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease control and Prevention, Training in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET) and Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET). Residents who are selected and enrolled into the E-FETP, follow its curriculum and receive a certificate of achievement accredited from CDC upon satisfactory completion of the two-year training program.

🦟 FETP in Action: Field Work in Disease Vector Control

This is what field epidemiology looks like on the ground! 🎥

As part of the first-ever FETP training track on Disease Vector Control for the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa region, our 32 residents were putting theory into practice through intensive on-the-job training.

As part of their intensive training, these 32 residents were applying their skills in real-world settings—investigating, monitoring, and building strategies to combat vector-borne diseases across all Egyptian governorates.

🎯 Why this matters:
FETP trains disease detectives by doing. Through hands-on mentored fieldwork, these residents are not only learning—they are delivering impact now, strengthening local capacities where they are needed most.

🚨 Historic Achievement for Egyptian Public Health! 🚨

Egypt FETP joins the Ministry of Health and Population in celebrating a monumental achievement: Dr. Amr Kandeel, The Vice of Minister of Health and Population, has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion.

Dr. Kandeel is the Egyptian ever to receive this prestigious global honor, recognizing over 25 years of exceptional contributions to public health in Egypt and the region.

This award underscores the critical impact of preventive medicine and robust public health systems—the very foundation of field epidemiology. Dr. Kandeel's leadership has been instrumental in driving the national achievements, including:

✨ Attaining WHO certifications for the elimination of polio, measles, rubella, trachoma, and malaria (making Egypt the first African country to eliminate malaria).
✨ Achieving control of Hepatitis B virus among children, a first in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
✨ Leading a transformative leap in national infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) programs, with 5 hospitals obtaining international accreditation.
✨ Pioneering the digital transformation of vital health systems, including vaccination registries, civil registration (birth/death), electronic disease surveillance, and quarantine management—areas where field epidemiologists play a key role.
✨ Expanding access to care through the accreditation of 129 primary healthcare units.

The Nelson Mandela Award was established in 2019 to honor the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth and is awarded annually for outstanding achievements in health promotion.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Amr Kandeel on this well-deserved international recognition! The award will be presented in May 2026 at the 79th World Health Assembly.

We are proud to work under a leadership that champions evidence-based prevention and strengthens the frontline of public health.

From Learning to Leading: Our Frontline Heroes Tackle Vector-Borne Outbreaks! 💪🦟

Last September, we powered up our Vector Control Track with an intensive Outbreak Investigation Workshop specially designed for our brilliant agricultural engineers! This wasn't just a lecture—it was a mission preparation.

When a vector-borne threat emerges, a rapid response is everything. That's exactly what our residents mastered. We dove deep into the critical skills needed to lead from the front:
- Mastering the Outbreak Playbook: From the first alert to declaring the outbreak over, we covered every critical step.
- Lab-Linkage in Action: Building the crucial bridge to diagnostic labs for fast, accurate results.
- Environmental Detective Work: Assessing the surroundings to find and eliminate breeding sites.
- The Power of Words: Crafting clear and effective risk communication messages for the public.
- Safety First: Ensuring team and community safety with protocols for fieldwork during outbreaks.

The real challenge began with a realistic simulation Exercise!. Our residents were thrust into a real-world scenario set in the Rift Valley, where they had to apply all their new skills under pressure to contain a simulated outbreak. It was amazing to see everyone work together so effectively to solve complex problems!

Thank you to our amazing agricultural engineers for your hard work and brilliant contributions! You are the vital link in protecting our communities, and our livestock. The future of outbreak response is in capable hands!

Shaping the Future: A Key Moment in Our FETP Vector Control Journey

Let's revisit an incredibly productive chapter for our FETP Vector Control Track! This wasn't just any assignment; it was an intensive fieldwork mission where our participants, under the expert guidance of their mentors, became the frontline detectives of public health.🔍

Armed with determination and purpose, they dove deep into their governorates to tackle vector surveillance head-on. The result? Powerful presentations where they shared comprehensive vector density maps for mosquitoes and rodents and delivered crucial evaluations of surveillance systems' data quality and timeliness. The energy in the room was truly inspiring, filled with innovative solutions and constructive feedback that helped shape the future of vector control in their governorates.

This experience wasn't just a success — it was a cornerstone event that strengthened our network of skilled epidemiologists and continues to impact public health efforts in Egypt!
