Field Epedimiology Training Program The E-FETP was the second in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

The Egyptian Field Epidemiology Training Program (E-FETP) is a competency-based training and service program in applied epidemiology and public health that builds the core competencies of public health epidemiologists in communicable disease surveillance and response. FETPs have been modeled and developed in many countries worldwide after the success of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) that was first created by CDC in 1951. Since 1980, CDC has helped establish 55 programs that have trained more than 3,100 graduates from 72 countries. Approximately 80% of graduates work in government in their home countries and many fill leadership positions in the public health systems. It started in 1993, in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease control and Prevention. In 2000, the program's success led to the establishment of the Epidemiology & Surveillance Unit (ESU) which is responsible for disease surveillance, outbreak investigation & response, training, and the development of the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS). Now FETP is a principle component of the ESU in the Ministry of Health (MOH). Up to year, 2015, 17 cohorts of total 107 officers have been graduated and now provide essential epidemiologic services to the country. E-FETP works in close collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease control and Prevention, Training in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET) and Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET). Residents who are selected and enrolled into the E-FETP, follow its curriculum and receive a certificate of achievement accredited from CDC upon satisfactory completion of the two-year training program.

🎉Celebrating World Field Epidemiology Day – September 7 🎉

Egypt Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) proudly celebrated World Field Epidemiology Day during a workshop titled "Outbreak Investigation", as part of the newly launched Vector Control Track of the Basic Level of FETP — the first of its kind in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

👩‍🔬👨‍🔬 32 agricultural engineers across Egypt are participating in this unique training, designed to enhance national capacity in preventing, detecting, and responding to vector-borne diseases.

Dr. Amr Kandeel, Deputy Minister of Health, emphasized that since its launch in 1993, Egypt’s FETP has played a key role in building public health capacity. This new track reflects Egypt’s ongoing leadership in health security and highlights the essential role of field epidemiologists in emergency preparedness and rapid response.

Dr. Nima Abid, WHO Representative in Egypt, commended the program’s alignment with the global priorities of health security, praising its direct impact on improving disease surveillance and outbreak response capabilities at the national level.

Dr. Rady Hammad, Head of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Sector, highlighted the importance of building practical skills for outbreak response, and praised the ongoing efforts of the ongoing national efforts in mapping and managing disease vectors.

🙏 On and every day, we honor our incredible field epidemiologists. You are the disease detectives, the backbone of our health security, and the frontline defenders keeping our communities safe. The impact of your work changes the world.💙

Making Our Mark: A Successful FETP Exchange Program Concludes

We were honored to host two outstanding FETP graduates from for an immersive exchange program, implemented in collaboration with ! 🇮🇶➡️🇪🇬

This wasn't just a visit; it was a deep dive into the heart of public health action in Egypt. Our Iraqi colleagues embarked on a hands-on journey through our national public health surveillance system, with a special focus on our event-based surveillance.

From high-level strategy sessions at the Ministry of Health and Population in the New Administrative Capital to on-the-ground tours of multi-level healthcare facilities, they went through the entire lifecycle of public health in action, from data collection to rapid response.

The exchange successfully achieved its core goals: strengthening field capacity, translating academic knowledge into practice, and expanding our powerful regional network of epidemiologists. It was an honor to host such dedicated professionals to advance our region's health security.

A huge thank you to for making this possible and to our colleagues from Iraq FETP for their fantastic energy and collaboration. The future of public health in our region is bright!

🚀 Making Our Mark: Field Epidemiology in Action! 🚀

The moment we've been training for is HERE! 🦟 Our pioneering first cohort of the Vector Control Track (Basic Level FETP) has hit the ground running for their first field assignment! 💪

Our brave residents are deployed across 20 governorates, diving deep into the heart of our vector surveillance systems. Their mission? To ensure our data is not just collected, but is rock-solid, timely, and ready for action.

This isn't just a training exercise—it's the first step in strengthening our nation's front-line defense against vector-borne diseases. The findings they gather will be invaluable for public health action and policy.

Stay tuned as these talented disease detectives and prove that strong data is the foundation of a healthier Egypt! 🇪🇬🌍
