Foal Clostridial Diarrhea

Clostridium perfringens Types A and C and Clostridium difficile have the potential to cause enterocolitis or inflammation of the small and large intestine in neonatal foals. Clostridium perfringens Type A is commonly found in the environment of horse farms, especially with historical presence of other species of livestock. Clinical signs of clostridium enerotoxemia include severe abdominal pain or colic, foul smelling or bloody diarrhea, dehydration, depression, abdominal distention and or rapid death. Early preparation and prevention is the key.

Attached is the protocol that we use here at the ERL.

SPLs are used to make treating eyes more comfortable for the horse and to make sure that medication is instilled into the eye. These catheters are easily dislodged and broken by the horse or any neighbors that can reach the system and chew the line. A more substantial IV extension set is placed over the SPL for protection.

If dislodged, the catheter can rub the cornea and/or medication will not reach the eye. Sometimes repair is necessary somewhere along its length.

This is a 10yo gelding who presented for colic that was refractory to treatment in the field. On presentation, he had mild but persistent abdominal pain. On abdominal ultrasound, he had severely dilated loops of small intestine, a sediment line in the small intestine reflecting persistent ileus (lack of motility),a single thickened loop of small intestine (suggesting strangulation of that segment), and increased free peritoneal fluid. An abdominocentesis (sampling of the fluid around the intestines) was performed and fluid analysis also suggested the need for surgery. He was taken to emergency surgery. At surgery, he had several feet of his distal small intestine (the ileum) incarcerated within a normal space called the epiploic foramen. This is an unlucky event that occurs with increased frequency in cribbers (this guy also happens to be a cribber). The small intestine was reduced from the entrapment and a pulse and motility slowly returned to this segment. No resection was performed in this case and he recovered without incident. He left today with a very happy Mom. Thank you for trusting us with his care.
