Importance of Health Screening for the LGBT+ Community.
The LGBTQ+ community includes people of all social classes, religions, races and ethnicities. Some people who identify as le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender, q***r, or gender non-conforming might face specific health concerns related to their gender choice, s*xual orientation and/or practices.
Many people report having experienced stigma and/or discrimination for their adult life choices and consequently worry about attending medical clinics. Also some people miss important health screenings because they may no longer identify with the organs they have.
Having worked many years around London in NHS GUM clinics, I have a wealth of experience in treating people from the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring they receive the most up-to-date advice regarding their s*xual health and STI testing. I do not judge people for their life choices or s*xual preferences, and I’m very comfortable discussing them so there is no need to feel embarrassed talking with me.
Although we have a fixed s*xual health clinic time, I try to make myself as available as possible in order to fit these important screenings in for people as I understand it’s not always possible to attend the clinic at the set time.
Going to see a doctor or nurse can be scary for anyone, but it is often especially scary for some. We, at the Family Medical Centre, encourage all of our patients to be their authentic selves so that we are able to help you without judgement.
It’s worth remembering that however you identify, it is imperative you attend preventative screenings, whether they be STI screening, breast examinations, prostate cancer checks, bowel cancer checks, cervical cancer tests, blood pressure checks, or blood tests as they may well save your life!
