The disease is caused by viruses and bacteria. Viral pharyngitis is diagnosed in 90% of all detected cases in adults and 70% in children. Rhinoviruses are the main pathogens, followed by adenoviruses, followed by influenza, coronavirus and bocavirus. However, in recent decades, with pharyngitis in children, cytomegalovirus, as well as Coxsackie, Epstein-Barr, and herpes simplex viruses, have often been detected.
In other cases, the causes of pharyngitis are bacteria - streptococci, Haemophilus influenzae, mycoplasma. The least common cause of acute pharyngitis are fungi from the genus Candida.
The provoking factors of the disease are:
weakening of the immune system;
hypothermia;
exposure to dust;
smoking;
trauma;
allergies;
caries;
chronic pathologies of the oropharynx;
frequent use of drugs for the common cold;
diabetes;
chronic pathologies of internal organs;
circulatory problems;
dryness and degenerative changes in the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx, oropharynx.
Acute pharyngitis of a bacterial or viral nature spreads from a sick person to a healthy person, usually by airborne droplets. Also sometimes there is a contact-household method of transmission. Pathogens can enter the body through shared utensils, handshakes, touches.
Chronic pharyngitis is more common in men than in women. According to studies, this diagnosis is made in 10 out of 100 people who went to the doctor.
