As some of you know, I haven’t been well lately. For the past three weeks, I’ve been dealing with the worst eye infection I’ve ever experienced. At times, I was genuinely afraid I might never fully recover my eyesight — and I panicked.
Thankfully, I’m now on the mend and my vision is improving. I’m not back to 100% yet (hence the sunglasses 😎), but I’m definitely heading in the right direction. This recovery is only thanks to the fact that I was able to be seen urgently by the right specialist — a cornea ophthalmologist, not a general emergency doctor. An aggressive antibiotic treatment was started immediately, with regular specialist follow-ups and the necessary tests.
All of this was only possible because I had private health insurance in place with Sanitas. Without it, I would most likely have suffered permanent vision damage, as the public healthcare system here in Spain simply wouldn’t have been able to provide such specialised care on such short notice.
I can’t stress enough how important it is to have private health insurance — for yourself and your loved ones. Even if you’re perfectly healthy (as I was), unexpected situations can happen without warning. Being able to see the right specialist quickly can make all the difference, and that’s only possible through private healthcare. Whether you already live in Spain or are planning to move here, health coverage should be a top priority.
At the same time, my husband also needed to see a specialist for a reasonably urgent issue. Within just one week, he had two online consultations with the appropriate specialist, blood tests completed within a day, and an MRI scheduled within three days. That kind of turnaround would simply not be possible in the public system.
Moments like these remind you again and again that health is our most valuable asset. Having a private health plan isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. I’m incredibly grateful to Sanitas for the outstanding care and support they’ve provided, not only now but on many other occasions as well.
If you’re still unsure whether private health insurance is worth it, I hope this real-life experience helps you decide. And when you do — choose the best.
