Book your appointment for immediate pain relief 👉 +34 609 14 36 90 Welcome to my osteopathy center in Barcelona. I am Kathryn McConkey, but you can call me Katy!
My name is Kathryn McConkey (mROE), an English-speaking Osteopath in Barcelona with 15 years of experience . 1000+ patients move pain-free at Osteopatía del Mar since 2013. I am a registered, trained osteopath, competent in the fields of structural, cranial, and visceral osteopathy. I am dedicated to helping my patients reach their maximum health potential. If you are looking for a professional and friendly osteopathy center in Barcelona that offers a holistic approach to health and personal treatment plans, please do not hesitate to contact me at +34 609 14 36 90. I can treat you in English, Spanish, and Catalan. Osteopathy looks at the body as a whole and is a non-invasive, drug-free manual therapy that aims to improve your overall health and well-being. Its holistic, hands-on approach to healthcare improves circulation and movement of your body in a gentle, non-abrasive way to balance all the body's systems. Pain in one area might actually be caused by an issue somewhere else, and we work to find and treat the root cause of your problem. This is done with in-depth questions (anamnesis) about your medical history and an extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology. At your appointment, I can help with all types of muscle and joint pain, headaches, sleep problems, anxiety, digestive issues, menstrual cramps, and many other problems. I also include professional advice on stretches and exercises, can refer you for doctor tests, and have massage guns and rollers for sale. Osteopatía del Mar is easily accessible by public transport and has three public car parks nearby, recommended by the local community. Do you have any discomfort around your face and jaw, maybe a soreness or tightness when you wake up, or a snapping, clicking sound when you bite down into something hard? Or is it uncomfortable to open your mouth fully.
You may have something called a TMJ disfunction. These letters are shorthand for temporomandibular joint (or in Spanish ATM articulo-temporomandibular ) . This is the joint that hinges your jaw to your face. The pain is usually caused by muscles tightening up in the area, maybe due to holding down on your teeth while working and concentrating, or maybe while asleep if you suffer from teeth grinding or bruxism. It can be quite painful and causes discomfort and irritation when eating or talking.
With gentle techniques aimed at softening the tight areas we can relax the jaw and ease discomfort. We can show you how to self-treat and you give you guidance on mouth and jaw exercises to get to the root cause of the problem.
If you would like more information give us a call.

I call it a peanut! It is a cork head rest, helpful for decompressing and relaxing all the small muscles at the base of your head and top of your neck. Lay down and place it under your head...and feel immediate relief.
I haven't been able to find any more of these to buy, but you can make your own with two tennis balls and an old sock😁, see the video below.

How many hours a day do you work?
Add that up in terms of sitting hours, particularly if it is a desk job.
Here are some basic pointers to help keep you in a good sitting position at your screen.
Keep flush on to the screen not twisting your torso around.
Feet flat on the ground, or on a support and legs uncrossed.
Elbows down to your side, will help you keep your shoulders level instead of following your mouse.
And stand up as much as you can just for a short walk around the room /office.

How comfortable is too comfortable?
… you fall into the soft comfort of your sofa and don’t get up for a couple of hours?
If you get back pain from sitting on your sofa for a few hours it may be because it is too soft. A really saggy sofa will offer little support to your lower back and surrounding muscles and may result in an achey back.

I was recommended an osteopath many years ago for the beginnings of a frozen shoulder. I had no idea what an Osteopath was, or how they treated. I went and was fascinated; my osteopath aligned my legs, did things to my diaphragm and barely looked at my shoulder and…. I felt great afterwards! So, curiosity piqued I went on-line to find out what it was all about. I read it was a hands-on way of treating the body in a manner that relieved people’s pain and made them feel better. I was hooked from the word go! Why? Well years previously I had studied a 4-year degree in something called Human Sciences. This was basically four years of Biology but crossed both disciplines; the Arts and the Sciences; we studied all sciences related to man: anthropology, philosophy, physiology, neurobiology, social and clinical psychology etc. It was a fascinating course and taught us all how to see things from all perspectives; the “whole” picture (clinical, social, philosophical) …..and now here was Osteopathy; a hands-on version, applying all the knowledge I had learnt about the human being.
As far as I could tell osteopathy was the study of anatomy and physiology and how these interact; how they work together in harmony to make a healthy human being (their definition of ill health was disharmony; blocks, congestion, contusion in the systems and how these could be rectified by small manipulations with the hands), but not only this. The information garnered at the beginning of a consultation (the anamnesis) involves all aspects of a person’s life and not merely their medical history. It includes factors such a sleep patterns, diet, ergonomics, work/social relationships. I honestly couldn’t believe it! I loved my degree but had never found a job that allowed me to apply all that I had learnt …and now here it was staring me in the face! A hands-on, holistic vision of the body. An all-round vision of why people get sick; posture, stress, mechanics, poor work and social relationships, poor diet, trauma to name but a few.
I found out where my nearest school was and signed up to the foundation course of one year’s anatomy, osteopathic models and manual techniques. The person who invented osteopathy (aprox. 125 ago) Andrew Taylor Still, when asked the secret to being a good osteopath said “Anatomy, Anatomy, Anatomy”. Too right! though I´ll misquote him… Study, study, study… and then study some more. The foundation course was followed up by the 4-year Osteopathy D.O course. Fascinating stuff though hard, hard, hard! The basics I mentioned above (anatomy, physiology), but then also embryology, clinical pathology, reading x-rays and more. Honestly, the body is an AMAZING thing. This was just the theory part, throughout these 5 years we were taught palpation skills, handling techniques, osteopathic techniques and how to “listen” with our hands and to hone our palpation skills….something you keep on learning probably for as long as you practise for.
Alongside my official degree and title, I also trained for 3 years with Jordi Salò Darder in La Bisbal where I became proficient in his method (now called Salò Darder technique) and practised my sacro-cranial training. It was different learning environment from my school and we had long hours of uninterrupted hands-on practise just listening to the human body.
So now qualified but not quite sure how to take part in the world again (12 hours of studying a day turns you into quite the hermit!) I set about looking for work.
I worked in various clinics in Barcelona and Catalunya, and then had the good fortune to meet and then work with Miguel Carboni at the (then) Aralia Centre Medic. Working with an experienced osteopath is a valuable learning experience and shadowing him, Jordi Salò, and Carlos Ferrari were formative experiences and I thank them all for the things I learned from them.
During this whole period (we are up to about 7 or 8 years now…and getting to the point of the story! How did Osteopatía del Mar begin) the one constant in my life was getting on my bicycle and cycling down to the sea to my local swimming pool and every time I came back I cycled through Pla de Palau…a light, peaceful square, full of trees and buildings with beautiful façades. I cycled past a low-lying building, just one storey high…and often thought what a great place it would make for a clinic. Then one day I realized there was a telephone number stuck onto one of the windows for rental…..weeks went by…months even, with me trying to memorize the number to go home and ring 93… something something…
I could never remember! , never remembered to call either, until the next time I cycled by! Finally! One day I stopped on my bike got out an old-fashioned pen! And wrote it down. I called that same day, no answer, went to the agency in person, had an interview made an appointment and saw the office the next day. Loved it and signed the contract. Then everything just fell into place in under a week! The treatment bed got ordered, IKEA did me proud and all rest came from begging, borrowing and finding in the street.
The fantastic logo you see is a painting by my mother (you can see more at the very NOT updated web www.rosemarymillar.com or go to the COAC art fair in Cambridgeshire every November), the word game puzzle was inspired in a web that mixes words up for you..when I remember his name I will write it in. My puzzle holds all the tenets of osteopathy.
Then all of you wonderful people came to the clinic and made it just perfect! I have met so many interesting, funny, kind, gentle, ..name your adjective, people over these six years that have made my time here practising invaluable! Osteopathy is great, it is inspiring, and it can help you! #OsteopathyWorks
And that’s how it began.
Now, back to work and looking forward to more and more of you lovely people coming to the clinic and making you feel great again!
