The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) in America has published its new 2025 Dyslexia Definition, developed to integrate current research and community input.
The definition maintains that dyslexia is a specific learning disability characterised by difficulties in word reading and/or spelling involving accuracy, speed, or both, which occur along a continuum of severity and persist despite effective instruction.
Key updates in the 2025 IDA definition include:
• Causation: The causes are complex, involving combinations of genetic, neurobiological, and environmental influences that interact throughout development.
• Secondary Consequences: It explicitly addresses the broader impact, noting secondary consequences such as reading comprehension problems, reduced reading and writing experience, and effects on psychological well-being and employment opportunities.
• Cognitive Factors: References to IQ-discrepancy or other cognitive abilities from the previous definition has been excluded.
• Intervention: It emphasises that language and literacy support before and during the early years of education is particularly effective.
This updated definition aims to better reflect the full scope of dyslexia for advocacy, research, and intervention.

A sincere thank you to all our member organisations who participated in today's Members Forum on Reasonable Accommodations in Exams. The forum provided a rich and necessary discussion, offering valuable insights into international practices and strategies for achievemeng improvements. It’s clear that many countries share similar hurdles: ensuring fair access and eligibility, providing a sufficient range of accommodations, and consistent legal application.
A vital takeaway was the need for students to have sufficient time to practice with assistive technology or other accommodations, so they can use them confidently and effectively on exam days. We also highlighted that better data collection is essential to enable analysis and drive future progress.
We will share a report of this valuable exchange with all EDA members soon.
