How to care for wooden cutting boards 🔪
1. Cleaning the board
• Sprinkle the surface with a mix of salt and baking soda — it helps remove odors and deep stains
• Squeeze lemon juice and rub the surface with half a lemon — the acid brightens stains and disinfects
• Scrub with a sponge or brush. For tough stains, leave the mixture on for 10 minutes
• Rinse and dry completely
2. Oiling the board
• After cleaning, always apply oil — it protects the wood from moisture, bacteria, odors, and pigments
• Mineral oil works best. It’s odorless, doesn’t go rancid, and penetrates deeply into the wood
• If you don’t have mineral oil, coconut or olive oil can work too, though they need more frequent reapplication
• Apply a thin layer over the entire surface and edges — this helps prevent warping
• Let it absorb, then wipe off any excess
3. When to reapply oil
• If the board looks dull, rough, or absorbs water quickly — it’s time to oil it again
• If needed, lightly sand with fine sandpaper and repeat the process
4. Basic care rules
• Never soak wooden boards in water
• Don’t put them in the dishwasher — heat and moisture will warp the wood
• Always dry the board after use
• Store vertically or in a well-ventilated space to prevent dampness
