We offer a new concept to fit modern lives, fully focusing on patient convenience. International Family Doctor, led by Dr Femke Ellens, offers preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic services for a wide array of acute and chronic problems, like a British or Dutch family doctor would.

Dr Femke is a Dutch ONLINE doctor, based in Spain, the Barcelona suburb area of Castelldefels and provides health care for the entire family ONLINE en with home visits . She is internationally trained, and can treat most health problems, like a family doctor. Dr Femke offers a unique combination of a professional approach combined with a lot of personal medical attention. She speaks Dutch, English, German, Spanish, and Greek (basic).

I’m taking a little time to recharge and spend quality moments with family and friends:
8–12 Dec – Short surf trip to Morocco  I’ll be unplugged, enjoying waves, sun, and some well-deserved downtime.
22 Dec–9 Jan – Christmas & New Year in the snow with my kids and friends  Time to celebrate, make memories, and enjoy a bit of festive chaos.

Let’s talk insulin resistance.  Quietly common and 100% worth knowing about.
You usually can’t feel insulin resistance. There’s no “my insulin feels moody today” sensation. It works behind the scenes, gently nudging blood sugar upward long before diabetes shows up. That’s why testing can be so valuable. 
When should you consider testing? • Family history of type 2 diabetes • Weight gain that doesn’t match lifestyle • Increased waist circumference • Irregular periods or PCOS • High blood pressure or cholesterol • Fatigue after meals • You just want a clear picture of your metabolic health 
Typical tests include fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c, and sometimes HOMA-IR. 
The positive part? Insulin resistance is highly responsive to small lifestyle shifts. You don’t need perfection — just consistency. A bit more movement, balanced meals, good sleep, and stress management already make your cells far more cooperative.

🦠 Measles Alert in Garraf, Catalonia

Public Health authorities have reported a measles outbreak in the Garraf area, affecting 8 people so far, mostly adolescents and young adults. 6 of them were unvaccinated. The first case appeared on September 4, and the outbreak is still active.
 Why it matters:
* Measles is highly contagious, especially among unvaccinated people.
* Most hospitalizations so far are mild, but measles can be serious, especially for children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.
* Public Health has already traced over 300 contacts to prevent further spread.
 What protects you:
* Being fully vaccinated is the best protection.
* If you are unsure about your immunity or your children’s vaccination status, check with your doctor.
 ⚠️ Reminder: Measles is preventable with the MMR vaccine. Let’s keep ourselves and our community safe!

🥖✨ Frozen bread = lower glycemic index! ✨
Here’s a cool food fact (literally 😏): when you freeze bread and then toast it, its glycemic index (GI) actually goes down.
👉 The glycemic index tells us how quickly a food makes your blood sugar rise. 👉 Lower GI = slower sugar release = more stable energy (and fewer crashes!). 👉 This can help with energy balance, cravings, and even long-term health.
So yes… freezing your bread doesn’t just fight food waste, it also makes it a little kinder to your blood sugar.

👟 10,000 steps a day – myth or magic?

We’ve all heard it: “You should walk 10,000 steps a day!”   But… where does that number actually come from? 
Fun fact: it wasn’t a medical guideline at all. It started in Japan in the 1960s as part of a marketing campaign for a pedometer called “Manpo-kei” (literally “10,000 steps meter”).   The number stuck — and suddenly the whole world was counting!
 So, is it true?  Walking more is absolutely good for your health:
* Boosts your mood 🧠
* Lowers risk of heart disease ❤️
* Improves sleep 😴
* Helps with weight control ⚖️
 But the magic isn’t exactly at 10,000. Research shows 7,000–8,000 steps a day already bring big health benefits. More is fine, but don’t stress if you don’t hit 10k every day — consistency matters more than perfection.
So lace up those sneakers, park a little further away, take the stairs… every step counts!
