The first time you see Asturian cider being poured properly is quite the experience. And then there’s the first time you try to pour it yourself. Watch out for apple-y splashes! It takes serious skills to become a proper ‘escanciador’. Bonus points if you recognise the famous French climber ‘echando un culín’ in the video!

However, with hundreds of years reflected in every piece, every plank, in generations filled with change, where the traces of another era are so evident that they impress at every turn. Another reason to love Asturias is how well-preserved tradition is here. Asturian clogs, or ‘madreñas’ are a great example. Carved from wood, they perch on three stilts or ‘pegs’ - designed to keep your feet out of the mud! They are still very much in use in the country. Any farmer worth their salt will have theirs by their kitchen door, ready to step into before heading out to the fields. Best of all, you don’t even take your slippers off first!
