I am a mother of three children, a doula, yoga teacher, and a woman who feels that being a doula is a privilege. I did my doula training in Finland in 2016 and since then I have been a birth and postpartum doula in Costa del Sol, Spain. I think that every woman deserves the right kind of support during pregnancy and childbirth and that every mother has the right to a good birth experience. As a doula, I can offer you emotional, physical and informational support during your pregnancy and during your labour. I can offer you non-medical pain-management techniques including relaxation and breathing techniques, massage, acupressure, labouring positions, mantras etc. If you wish I can support you during the whole journey from the first weeks of pregnancy until the postpartum period or I can just travel with you for a certain period of time. I support you in your decisions and I provide information on the topics that you feel that are important to you in relation to pregnancy and birth and postpartum period. As a doula I have experience e.g. hospital births (in both Malaga and Marbella hospitals both private and public sector), home birth, breastfeeding, baby wearing etc. I can support you / your spouse in Finnish, English or Spanish.

A postpartum parent wants you to know she's tired and it's hard. Your practical support and holding space are everything.

What did you wish people understood about your postpartum period?

Your baby will come when your baby is ready 💙

Due dates are simply an estimate. Did you know they used to give "due months" rather than dates? Many people in the past were told their baby would come "the end of May" rather than specific days.

Even if you have an "exact" date due to IVF, every baby's exact gestation period varies.

Due dates provide us an estimate. They're one piece of the puzzle in assessing baby's growth, wellness, and readiness for the world.

When did you give birth?

As a doula, I want nothing more than for you to have the birth of your dreams. I want you to feel confident, positive, and like your birth is nothing but a happy memory. I wish I could promise you a specific birth, but I cannot.

However, as a doula, I do promise you this: continuous support without judgement.

I wish I could promise a smooth, shorter than average, spontaneous vaginal birth, but I cannot.

So I promise you this, whenever you request I join you during labor, I’m there. When you need support, you’ve got my words and my hands. When you have questions, I’m ready with evidence-based information. And regardless of how your birth unfolds, I’m with you, I’m supporting you, and I think you are incredibly brave and strong.

“The raw ecstasy of bringing a new soul into the world is a direct result of the body’s natural chemistry. At the moment of birth, a massive surge of oxytocin floods the system, triggering an intense wave of love and immediate bonding. This hormonal peak, combined with a high release of endorphins, creates a powerful state of euphoria that overrides the physical exhaustion of labor. It is a biological transformation where the intensity of birth is instantly replaced by a deep, overwhelming sense of reward and connection.”

A quick reminder of a few key facts, and a link to find out more.

Vitamin K is offered to all newborn babies.

It is up to parents to decide whether their baby has vitamin K.

Vitamin K is offered as a routine preventative treatment because a tiny number of babies (about 1 in 11,000) develop a serious bleeding problem, and vitamin K can prevent this.

As always, there's a bigger picture, and a number of things that parents might want to take into account when making their decision.

If you’re a parent or parent-to-be who is looking for resources on Vitamin K, we have an information hub on this on www.sarawickham.com/vk, where you can also see details of Dr Sara Wickham's book on this topic.

My body knows how to have this baby just as my body knew how to grow this baby.

Placing your baby skin-to-skin on your body has been scientifically proven to be one of the best things you can do! Numerous research studies have found benefit after benefit from spending time with your newborn in skin-to-skin contact. It reaps multiple benefits for both baby and parents.

Researchers say a baby in skin-to-skin contact with the mother stimulates a specific part of the newborn’s brain. The baby is stimulated to move to mom’s breast, attach and begin feeding. This first step – getting sustenance – encourages physical development. A second step also happens. The baby will open his or her eyes and first gaze upon mother. This encourages emotional and social development.

DELAYED CORD CLAMPING - WAIT FOR WHITE
After baby is born we usually think of the umbilical cord as a relic – part a life support system that is no longer needed. But the reality is that the cord has one last job to do, and it’s a big one.

The cord and placenta are a sort of external circulation system: one vein carries oxygen and nutrient-rich blood from the placenta to the baby, and two arteries carry carbon dioxide rich blood and waste away from baby to the placenta for purification. When baby is born, about 1/3 of its blood is in the external part of the circulation system, but quickly makes it’s way to the baby via the umbilical cord. Unless of course, the cord is cut before the transfer is complete.

Delayed umbilical cord clamping (DCC) allows more blood to transfer from the placenta to the baby, increasing the baby’s blood volume by up to a third.

The iron in the blood increases the newborn’s iron storage, which is vital for healthy brain development.

Some new studies have found that DCC can have a positive effect on both preterm and full-term babies. These benefits include an increase in placental transfusion, a 60% increase of RBCs and a 30% increase in neonatal blood volume.

Another advantage of DCC is the decreased risk of iron deficiency anemia.
The extra blood at birth helps the baby to cope better with the transition from life in the womb, where everything is provided for them by the placenta and the mother, to the outside world. Their lungs get more blood so that the exchange of oxygen into the blood can take place smoothly.

Delayed clamping also results in an infusion of stem cells, which play an essential role in the development of the immune, respiratory, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems, among many other functions. The concentration of stem cells in fetal blood is higher than at any other time of life. ICC [immediate cord clamping] leaves nearly one-third of these critical cells in the placenta.

Stem cells may also help to repair any brain damage the baby might have suffered during a difficult birth. 📸
