You have probably heard of the expression "you are what you eat"
What we eat can also have a significant impact in helping our body reduce the symptoms of inflammation. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that normally cushions the ends of bones in our joints deteriorates. Cartilage is tissue that enables friction free movement of our joints, when it wears down often due to “wear and tear” it causes inflammation of the lining of the joint. Symptoms include pain, rigidity, loss of flexibility and swelling.
To help alleviate the symptoms of Osteoarthritis and to prevent further damage to joints include vitamins A,C and E in your diet.
Maintaining a healthy weight and watching your cholesterol levels particularly the LDL (low density lipoproteins aka the bad cholesterol) will help, talk to your medical doctor if you are worried about cholesterol.
Below is a list of some key foods to include in your diet to help ease the symptoms of Osteoarthritis:
Oily fish - (Salmon, Tuna, Sardines, Mackerel) contain Omega-3 fatty acids which have anti-inflammatory properties. Other sources include Chia seeds, walnuts and flaxseed oil.
Greens – (e.g. Spinach, Kale, Broccoli) Dark leafy greens are rich in Vitamin D and stress-fighting phytochemicals and antioxidants. Vitamin D is not only important for calcium absorption but also boosts the immune system, helping the body to fight off infection. Broccoli is also rich in vitamins K, C and calcium.
Nuts – contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, zinc and Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) which helps the immune system.
Dairy – milk, cheese and yogurt all rich in Calcium and Vitamin D to enhance bone strength.
Oils – Extra virgin olive oil, avocado and Garlic :)
When you have Osteoarthritis your body is in an inflammatory state, the following are foods to avoid: processed sugars, saturated fats and refined carbohydrates as these contain substances that actively contribute to inflammation.
In addition to a healthy diet Acupressure and Qigong can assist in balancing your body and alleviating the symptoms of Osteoarthritis.
