______________

It's a pleasure to be debuting this evening on the podium of the Zagreb Philharmonic orchestra, after so many enjoyable productions in past years leading the Croatian Baroque Orchestra in Croatia’s beautiful capital city. The itinerary I put forward to the Philharmonic explores two of Haydn’s and Mozart’s later symphonies, two worlds that are close to each other in time (but also in human terms, considering the kindred friendship that linked the two composers despite their age difference), yet different in the way they engage with the magnificence offered by the structure of the classical symphony orchestra. In Haydn, this meant elegance, breadth and formal completeness while in Mozart’s Jupiter it meant restless experimentation, albeit within a luminous, sacral landscape. Alongside these works there will be a brief romantic intermezzo: Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto No. 2 with Nikša Bobetko, the excellent soloist from the Philharmonic, a piece requested by the orchestra almost as if to create a stylistic break allowing the two majestic classical works to be seen in contrast. Still today, Bottesini is underestimated as a composer, as a performer, and for the relationship he had with the great composers of his time. Let us not forget that Verdi called on him to conduct the premiere of Aida in Cairo”.

Programme
Haydn: Symphony No. 96 in D major, Miracle
Bottesini: Double Bass Concerto No. 2 in B minor
Mozart: Symphony No. 41 in C major, KV 551, Jupiter

Good people of Hamburg!

This Friday evening I will be giving a recital of modern and contemporary works that includes several commissions written for me in the past few years as well as two great classics of the modern repertoire (Luc Ferrari’s “Programme commun” of 1972 which I had the great honour of reviving and then recording for with the cooperation of + Hans Werner Henze’s “Six Absences”) and a new commission by the of “Virani” (2026) for harpsichord and quadraphonic electronics.

I have to confess that it is with new music that I feel the great desire to get out of bed every day - something about the creation of new work is what positively thrills me as a musician. I hope to see many of you there!

'As I started learning it, I suddenly realised it was grabbing me like no other work had ever done before'

For cellist Johannes Moser, the theatricality of Lutosławski's Cello Concerto opened up a fascinating relationship between soloist and orchestra. Link in comments 🎻
