Thinking In Waves….

If someone had tried to introduce the concept of “Thinking In Waves” when I was the CEO of an Olympic/Paralympic sport organization, I would have dismissed it and them quickly.

Back then, who had time to think about learning from the principles of waves? To pause, be patient, and let go?

For I was too busy sprinting, grinding, hacking, and rigidly pressing forward….

At the expense of

Seeing, feeling, understanding, and aligning with

The Waves that were always around me…

Waves that could have shifted the nature of my health, creativity, relationships and transformed the nature of my work.

It’s so easy to see now how much Free Energy I lost.

Today, the Waves - and the Free Energy they yield - are central to a life I could not have imagined a few years ago.

And in this next season of Thinking In Waves, which begins this week, I’ll resume my weekly essays about the pursuit of spectacular rides on Life’s Waves with new ideas and innovative platforms that will give you clarity about the Waves that surround you and how to leverage them to your advantage.

The Olympic Dream…

Mine? It was hard to imagine without a sense of place.

Once I came to La Seu d’Urgell for the first time in 1991, the spirit of the people and culture of the country anchored a clear vision for what was possible.

For many years, I’ve called La Seu home… which today makes the 60 second walk to the Parc del Segre as frequent as it is simple - where I get to watch a new generation of athletes bring their own Olympic dreams into focus…

Which for the next three years is now anchored to Oklahoma City, an unexpected but beautiful choice for the Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross events at the 2028 Olympic Games.🇺🇸

The line between my current home and past home stands to deliver some rich connection in both directions over the next few years… and hopefully shorten that line in the process.

I may not completely understand dropping off the ramp in La Seu the way Olympians like Manu Ochoa and David Llorente do…

But that splash upon landing? From this past week forward, there is a clear vision of the excitement and legacy that these athletes and Oklahomans are going to create together.

The Daily Coaching Question

A friend recently shared some thoughtful questions that coaches should ask themselves after a game or competition. These were questions that help us review leadership, communication, and points of improvement - all valid and important “Post-Game” boxes to check.

Here’s the question I ask myself BEFORE every training session with athletes and BEFORE every client call with leaders that anyone can implement starting now:

How is my contribution today to this person going to make a positive difference in her/his life 20 years from now?

Change performance.
Change culture.
Change lives.

It’s Planting Season

One of my favorite sports physiologists says, “Big trees grow slowly.”

And the best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago.

The envy-factor kicks in when you come across someone just like you, who is accomplished at a skill or is fulfilled in their dream job or the place they choose to live their life.

It’s human to wish we had started to learn a skill in our youth, or a decade ago, even five years or one year ago.

Who stood in your way? What blocked your momentum?

Start Now = Seed Plant

There is a quest that pulls at you right now. What is it? Ten years from now you can feel it as a regret or you can relish it as an accomplishment.

To plant seeds every day means to exercise a daily practice of self-investment, far removed from the immediacy of what appears to be in your way.

Whether its work, relationships, or life skills… by all means, find a few tactics that reduce friction of taking a small step forward, the only trade-off is a little time in your day.

And with that little bit of time each day, you plant a seed.

Consistency and patience in our practice anchor a culture where we compassionately place ourselves ahead of our challenges. Turning inward, not out, for a few minutes with no comparison to someone more accomplished or judgment about yourself, IS the seed to plant every day.

And the good news is that every day in YOUR space, it is planting season.

That’s how a few minutes becomes 10 years.
