A great explanation of the autonomic nervous system by a colleague, see which responses you recognise in yourself ❤️
I haven’t posted about STRESS for a while, so here it comes ….
One of the key elements of life is stress. We don’t live in a vacuum so we can’t avoid it. It is everywhere in our daily lives, and can creep in to everything that we do unless we understand this ....
The causes of stress are external, but stress itself is not in them, it is in us. Stress is the internal response we make to external changes, difficulties, challenges, and even situations that shouldn’t cause us stress at all.
In this post I’d like to tell you about the branches of the Autonomic Nervous System, and how this is involved in your stress response. And to do that I’m using this great image from a fabulous website. The link is at the end of my post. ⬇️
The Autonomic Nervous System is named so, because it works autonomously, without your conscious input. Its primary function is to maintain homeostasis. 🧠
It consists of two branches, the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System.
The Sympathetic Nervous System is the part of the Autonomic Nervous System that prepares the body for the ‘fight or flight’ response.🤺
The Parasympathetic Nervous System endeavours to stimulate the body’s ‘rest and digest’ response, to restore calm.😌
Unfortunately many people find themselves in a cycle of constant stress. And then sadly, the body almost forgets how to switch between these 2 systems, getting ‘stuck’ in the Sympathetic Nervous System state. 😩
That’s not a great state to be in for too long, and it’s in this state that imbalance and ultimately illness could happens. 🤒
I know Reflexology to be an amazing therapy to support your body to ‘remember’ how to ‘rest and digest’. 💙
If you’ve had loads of Stress and not enough Reflexology, then please make April the month that you book your appointment.
