What happens during dialysis?
⠀
During a four-hour dialysis treatment, your blood will go through the dialyzer 15 to 20 times, and only about 1-1/2 cups of your blood will be outside of your body at any time.
⠀
While you should not feel pain or discomfort during dialysis treatment, let a member of your health care team know right away if you feel dizzy or experience cramping. Dizziness, nausea and muscle cramps are potential side effects of low blood pressure.

When is dialysis necessary?

Renal failure is a condition in which the kidneys lose their ability to perform their normal functions: filtration, regulation of levels and hormone production.

In general and despite an apparent stable clinical situation, dialysis should be started when renal function is reduced 8-12%.

What happens if you have a medical emergency during your holiday?

The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) lets you get state healthcare in Europe at a reduced cost or sometimes for free.
If you have a UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) it will be valid until the expiry date on the card. Once it expires, you’ll need to apply for a GHIC to replace it.

What can you expect from your dialysis treatment?

Our doctor will review with you your dialysis protocol and answer any questions you may have. You will then be escorted to the treatment room where you will be weighed before being escorted to a treatment chair that has been prepared for you. Every chair is cleaned thoroughly before each new patient sits down.
