Sometimes distance in families doesn’t come from one big moment…

It’s not always a major fallout.
Not always something you can clearly explain.

More often, it’s a build-up of small moments over time…

Moments where someone felt:
• unheard
• misunderstood
• unable to fully be themselves

Over time, this can quietly shape how safe a relationship feels — even between parents and their adult children.

💬 For many expats, this can feel even more complicated…

Living in Spain can bring space, perspective, and a different pace of life —
but it can also highlight:
• family distance back home
• unresolved relationships
• or emotional gaps that were easier to ignore before

Sometimes the physical distance mirrors something emotional that was already there.

💡 The important thing to remember:

Distance doesn’t always mean a lack of love.
Often, it reflects unspoken needs, old patterns, or protection of emotional wellbeing.

And these things can be explored and understood — gently, at your own pace.

At Therapy Partners Spain, we support individuals, couples, and families within the expat community to:

✔ Make sense of complex family relationships
✔ Work through distance, conflict, or disconnection
✔ Rebuild communication and emotional safety

They were there… but not really there.”

Growing up with a parent who was physically present but emotionally unreachable can leave a very specific kind of confusion.

You had food. A home. Structure.
But something deeper was missing… connection, warmth, emotional safety.

And often, as a child, you don’t have the words for that.
You just feel it.

👉 Many people describe it as trying to reach someone through glass.
👉 A sense of loss… without anything obvious to grieve.

This is sometimes called “invisible grief” — grieving the relationship you needed, even while that person is still in your life.

It can show up later as:
• Difficulty trusting others
• Feeling “not enough”
• People-pleasing or emotional withdrawal
• Struggling to understand your own feelings

And here’s the important part:

💬 You didn’t imagine it.
💬 Your experience is valid.

Emotional absence is real — even when everything looked “fine” on the outside.

🌱 Healing is possible

Understanding this isn’t about blame.
It’s about making sense of your story and learning a new way of connecting — with yourself and others.

At Therapy Partners Spain, we support people navigating:
✔ Childhood emotional neglect
✔ Attachment and relationship difficulties
✔ Identity and self-worth
✔ Trauma and unresolved grief

Sometimes the hardest thing to do…
is also the most healing.

Letting go.

We often hold on tightly to how we think life should be —
how people should behave,
how relationships should unfold,
how we expected things to turn out.

And when reality doesn’t match that picture…
it can leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or even broken.

But what if peace doesn’t come from control —
but from release?

The truth is, so much of what we hold onto isn’t fixed or certain.
It’s fluid, changing… sometimes even imagined in our own minds.

✨ Letting go doesn’t mean giving up
✨ It means allowing life (and yourself) to breathe
✨ It means putting down the “glass” you’ve been carrying for too long
✨ It means choosing to begin again — gently, in this moment

You are not what happened to you.
You are what you choose next.

Today might not be about having all the answers.
It might simply be about loosening your grip…
and taking one steady breath forward.

💬 If this resonates, what’s one thing you might gently let go of today?

💛 At Therapy Partners, we support you in navigating these moments — whether it’s grief, relationships, anxiety, or feeling stuck.

We don’t talk about it.”

For many people who grew up in the 1960s and 70s, that wasn’t just a phrase…
It was a way of life.

Families stayed strong by staying silent.
Emotions were managed privately.
And “getting on with it” was often seen as strength.

But what happens when that silence follows you into adulthood?

Recent reflections in psychology highlight that many from this generation weren’t just private — they were shaped in environments where emotional expression wasn’t modelled or encouraged.

So instead of learning how to talk about feelings, they learned how to carry them.

👉 To cope quietly
👉 To push through
👉 To avoid burdening others

And over time, this can show up as:

• Finding it hard to open up in relationships
• Struggling to express needs or vulnerability
• Feeling emotionally distant (even when you care deeply)
• Carrying stress, grief, or trauma internally

This isn’t a flaw.
It’s a pattern that made sense at the time.

💬 A Therapy Partners Reflection

In our work across Spain with individuals, couples, and families, we often see this pattern — especially within expat communities navigating change, loss, and identity.

And something important happens in therapy:

What was once silent… becomes safe to speak.

Not all at once.
Not forced.
But gently, at your pace.

Because opening up isn’t about “changing who you are” —
it’s about giving yourself permission to be understood.

🌿 You’re Not Alone

If you recognise yourself (or someone you love) in this, you’re not broken.

You may simply have never been given the space to learn emotional language.

And it’s never too late.
