It’s ok if you’re finding it hard that everyone is shrinking 💕
I believe everyone has full autonomy to do whatever they want with their bodies. We don’t need to know the reasons behind a person’s weight-loss. I don’t think individuals should be judged or have to defend their choices about their own bodies. And as much as I believe this, at times, I have found watching the world shrink hard. Both those things can be true - we can not judge others and yet, we can find losing representation challenging.
In my relatively short life I have seen many different body trends and people adapting their bodies to move with them. And, even though the body positivity trend was flawed, we did get to see people with very different bodies appear happy and healthy. And there are a lot of people, myself included, that were positively impacted by that. It is easier to think you can accept yourself when you see someone who looks like you doing it! But being thrown out
of that and now chucked into skinny tok and seeing our fav celebrities now shrinking themselves feels very disorientating.
It’s ok to grieve for that small slice of time when we were told that being a chubby babe was okay (if you were chubby in the right way, of course). It’s ok if losing representation feels heavy. But I think that our energy is better placed examining the systems that expect us to change our physical bodies so quickly to mold to trends and just how ludicrous that is. When we see bodies being talked about like this, we know the focus isn’t our health, its profit. Regardless of what capitalism says the current beauty ideals are, we can resist and do what is right for our needs and circumstances.
What is certain is that all our bodies will change in one way or another. Some of those reasons may be complex for us to talk about. We are not entitled to information or explanation on anyone’s bodies, as no one is on ours. Bodies will change, trends will change. And in a way I find that comforting. The more I remember this trend is temporary, the easier it is to ignore and center what works for me.
