Last December my husband, Nodge, was diagnosed with mixed dementia (vascular and Alzheimer’s). He constantly lost his keys, wallet and glasses. He asked the same question and told the same stories repeatedly. He couldn’t remember where he lived. He’d even got lost on the way to the toilet in the night. He couldn’t join conversations because he couldn’t follow them. He was unable to drive because he couldn’t think about more than one thing at once. There were lots of signs of dementia.

At the Memory Clinic we had wanted to discuss a prevention programme but instead were given a virtual pat on the head and a pile of depressing leaflets about where to go for support. There was no hint of hope...We had two days of deep depression and hopelessness then decided to take things into our own hands.

We went to the Alzheimer’s prevention charity Food for the Brain and watched a 4 hour ‘masterclass’ by some of the world’s leading prevention professors. It was mind-blowing. Nodge did their free on-line Cognitive Function test, and questionnaire which works out your Dementia Risk Index and tells you what actions to take to reduce your risk. His score was 56% – it should be zero.

Nodge started taking the recommended B vitamin supplements and omega-3 fish oils, radically changed his diet, cutting out all sugar and refined carbs and added two tablespoons of Ketofast (C8 oil) a day. C8 is, a type of fat from coconuts that the body turns into ketones. Ketones are an alternative fuel which brain cells prefer to glucose.

In just three months the change has been remarkable. We both feel better. Our moods are better, our energy is better. Honestly, I feel like I’ve got my husband back. I am so grateful to Food for the Brain.

Keep away from packaged foods, whether they claims to be “Plant- based”, “Gluten-free” or “Lactose-Free” it doesn’t mean they are healthy most are ultra-processed!

Keep to clean, varied, fresh and seasonal options!😋

As you probably know from my page, I'm all in favor of plants. After returning from a large expo featuring all the latest innovations in food, supplements, and personal care products, I can see that 'plant-based' everything is taking hold. That said, don't let the 'plant' reference deceive you into thinking that just because it's from plants, it's healthy. I see a lot of plant-based, ultra-processed foods out there that have me scratching my head. They don't all carry the true health halo. Stay close to whole foods!

Lettuce season!!

hello, I am replying to lovely Stella's request (with Nourish the Guide) for juices with lettuce, as she has a lot in the garden.
So, lettuce is a rich source of vitamins K and it may help in controlling inflammation, reducing body weight, promoting brain health, and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and other related diseases like diabetes and cancer. It’s best if you use the Romaine lettuce, as not all lettuce is created equal in nutrients and flavour. Also, the darker the lettuce, the more nutrient-dense it is.
Basically you can replace spinach with lettuce in juices, but the variety can determine how good it tastes:

Here are 4 recipes

4 large lettuce leaves
½ yellow pepper (cored and deseeded)
½ cup kale
1 tart green apple
1 sweet red apple
½ head fennel
4 celery sticks
1 cup spinach
2.5cm (1in) piece fresh root ginger (unpeeled)
¼ lemon (rind and pith removed)
½ cucumber

2 apples
½ head lettuce
1 cup kale
½ cup parsley
1 fresh green chilli (deseeded)
¼ cup mint
½ lime (rind and pith removed)
1 large cucumber

½ head lettuce
1½ pears (stalks removed)
1 cup spinach
1 cup kale
4 broccoli florets and stems
½ cup basil
1 cucumber

1 pear (stalk removed)
1 sweet apple (stalk removed)
1 small beetroot (washed and trimmed)
½ head fennel
4 celery stalks
½ head lettuce
2.5cm (1in) piece fresh root ginger (unpeeled)
