Nonyne (CAS 3452-09-3) is a hydrocarbon molecule with the chemical formula C9H18. It is an alkene, which means it contains a carbon-carbon double bond.

Nonyne is a clear, colorless liquid at room temperature, with a boiling point of 163-164°C (325-327°F) and a melting point of -99.5°C (-147°F). It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene.

Nonyne is primarily used in the chemical industry as a building block for the synthesis of other chemicals. It can be used as a monomer in the production of polymers, such as polyolefins, and as a starting material for the synthesis of specialty chemicals, such as flavors and fragrances.

While nonyne is generally considered to be low in toxicity, it is still important to handle it with care and take appropriate safety precautions when working with it. It can be irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system if it is inhaled or comes into contact with the skin or eyes.

Nonyne it is primarily used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes and personal care products. Here are some of its uses in the fragrance industry:

- Perfumes and Colognes: Nonyne is used in perfumes and colognes due to its strong and long-lasting scent. It is used as a top, middle or base note depending on the desired fragrance profile.
- Body Sprays: Nonyne is also used in body sprays and mists for a refreshing and long-lasting fragrance.
- Shower Gels and Soaps: Nonyne is often used in shower gels and soaps to provide a pleasant fragrance and enhance the overall sensory experience.
- Air Fresheners: Nonyne is also used in air fresheners and room sprays to provide a pleasant and refreshing scent.
- Aromatherapy Products: Nonyne is used in aromatherapy products such as candles, diffusers, and essential oils due to its strong and pleasant fragrance.

Nowadays, many products and materials are developed with the goal of reducing, neutralizing or masking unpleasant odors that we encounter in our daily lives. However, for these technologies to gain the trust of future consumers, they must demonstrate their effectiveness.

The effectiveness of these technologies is largely determined by the source of the odor itself. Testing with REAL ODOURS can be difficult to repeat and can lead to non-comparable results.

To address this issue, Sensenet can analyze the key chemical components of a variety of typical malodors and create synthetic malodor mixtures that contain the essential constituents necessary to reproduce the odor perception.

While these mixtures cannot fully replicate the complex mixture of odorants found in real odors, they do contain a mixture of major odor components for each type of odor. Testing with these mixtures allows for the demonstration of a product's ability to reduce the perception of key odorants from a variety of chemical groups.

Sensenet offers product performance testing through sensory analysis, molecular assessment, or a combination of the two. With Sensenet's expertise, businesses can confidently promote their odor-reducing technologies and attract consumers seeking a solution to unpleasant odors.

Here are some interesting facts about testing odors for product improvement:

- Odor testing is used in a variety of industries, including food and beverage, cosmetics, and cleaning products, to improve the sensory experience of products.
- The human nose can detect thousands of different odors, making it a valuable tool for evaluating product quality and identifying defects.
- Sensory panels, composed of trained evaluators, are often used to test the odor of products. They provide subjective evaluations of the quality of an odor and can help identify variations in odor from batch to batch.
- Odor testing can also be performed using electronic noses, which use sensors to detect and analyze odors. Electronic noses can be programmed to identify specific odors and can be useful in product quality control.
- In the fragrance industry, gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) is used to separate and identify individual odor compounds in a fragrance. This technique helps perfumers and flavorists create complex and nuanced scents.
- Odor testing can also be used in product development to assess the effectiveness of odor-masking agents or to evaluate the impact of different manufacturing processes on the odor of a product.
- The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning is becoming increasingly common in odor testing. These technologies can help identify patterns and trends in odor data and can be used to predict how consumers will respond to a product.

🆕 Sensenet Odour Tech’days

Some wounds, such as cancerous or tumorous wounds, can be highly odorous. Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria harboured in the necrotic wound tissue emit volatile organic odour compounds, such as putrescine and cadaverine.

To improve the quality of life of treated patients, the healthcare industry is constantly researching and developing innovations to limit these odours. In particular, dressings containing odour-reducing technologies are emerging on the market.🩹

Our expert Tournier will explain the methodologies available to evaluate the effectiveness of these devices during a presentation at our next Odour tech'days.

🆕 Sensenet Odour tech’days

Today, materials for interior design and decoration are widely scrutinized. First of all for air quality reasons, but also for olfactory comfort.

Therefore, sensory analysis can be an indispensable tool to evaluate the perception of paint and to compare the development of new formulations with existing products.
This is on the condition that an experimental protocol is developed that is as close as possible to the actual use of these products.

Yanko Guimaraes, our expert from Sensenet Brazil, will present a case study on testing paint odour with three panel composition, on Tuesday, 17th January 2023
