A Remarkable Case: Cataract Surgery on a 102-Year-Old Patient
On a routine day at our ophthalmology practice, we encountered an extraordinary patient - a 102-year-old woman struggling with severely diminished vision in her right eye.
Upon a quick examination with the slit lamp, Dr. Sadin Hailu observed a complete cataract obscuring her right eye to the point of only perceiving hand motion, while her left eye had a vision of 20/200. Despite her advanced age, the patient's request was simple yet profound - to regain better eyesight. Recognizing the potential challenges involved, we proceeded with a comprehensive evaluation, including a B-scan, which revealed a normal posterior segment.
The biggest challenge in this case was her advanced age. Patients of this age often do not visit our clinic due to various health issues. However, given the strong interest and support from both the patient and her family, our surgeon scheduled her for phacoemulsification and intraocular lens insertion.
The surgery on her left eye was completed in just 12 minutes, during which the patient's remarkable cooperativeness and composure throughout the surgery were equally impressive. Despite her advanced age, she displayed a level of patience and trust that facilitated the successful ex*****on of the procedure, a testament to her resilience and the rapport established between the medical team and the patient.
The surgical team lead by very well experienced vitreoretinal surgeon Dr. Sadin Hailu and skilled support staff, approached the procedure with the utmost care and precision.
On the first postoperative day, the patient's face radiated with joy and gratitude, as her vision had significantly improved. The delight shared by the patient and her family members was a profound reminder of the transformative power of cataract surgery, even at the remarkable age of 102 years.
This case underscores two important messages:
1. Cataract surgery can be successfully performed even at the age of 102 if it benefits the patient. * Age should not be an absolute barrier to improving quality of life through vision restoration.
2. Modern cataract surgery, specifically phacoemulsification, can be done on advanced cataract like this case. This technique allows for precise and efficient removal of the cataract, even in challenging cases.
In conclusion, this experience reaffirms the importance of considering cataract surgery for elderly patients who stand to benefit from improved vision. It also highlights the advancements in surgical techniques that make such procedures safe and effective for patients of all ages.
