Hello Healing valves Ethiopia family! as you all know for the past few months we have been using the name Mending hearts Ethiopia (MHE). As of September 20,2020 our name has been officially changed to Healing valves Ethiopia(HVE) by the decision of the board. We will be posting and creating contents more frequently on our pages(Both Facebook and Telegram). Creating awareness and educating the community will be our main goal. የኢትዮጵያ የልብ ማዕከል ሜዲካል ዳይሬክተር እና cardiac intensivist የሆኑት ዶ/ር ሔለን በሀገር አቀፍ ደረጃ የኮሮና ቫይረስ ወረርሽኝን ለመግታት በሚደረገው እንቅስቃሴ ላይ ከፍተኛ ተሳትፎ በማድረግ ላይ ይገኛሉ። በተለይም ለጤና ባለሙያዎች መመሪያ በማውጣት ዘርፍ እና የህክምና ቁሳቁስ ክፍፍል እንዲሻሻል በማድረግ ወረርሺኙን ለመቆጣጠር እየሰሩ ይገኛሉ።

እኛም ይህንን ጥረታቸውን በማድነቅ ልናመሰግናቸው እንወዳለን።

In response to the pandemic, Dr Helen who is a cardiac intensivist and Medical director of Cardiac Center Ethiopia, is working as part of the national covid 19 task force in Ethiopia to help prepare guidelines for healthcare professionals and tackle the challenging task of resource distribution to help prepare and manage the Covid 19 outbreak.

FROM WOLO(WERE ELU) TO WOLO(BATI) A HUNDRED VALVE JOURNEY

"The perk of being a Cardiac Surgeon in sub-saharan Africa is doing more valve surgery due to rheumatic heart diseases than others.

Today I was blessed to celebrate my 100 valve surgery as a Lead Surgeon in my country, Ethiopia. I had the honor to touch the hearts of Ethiopians in all directions and from all walks of life. I had also few chances to reach out for those neighboring countries heart valves.

To my surprise when I celebrate today my 100th Valve Surgery by doing Mitral Valve Replacement(MVR) and Tricuspid Valve Repair on a young chap from WOLO(BATI). It took me back to my first valve surgery(MVR) 2years ago from WOLO(WERE ELU)"

*"Before the surgery I couldn’t play with my friends, I couldn’t run and my heart would feel so . Now I can run and play with my friends. I am very happy." Afomiya, 5years, says. Tigest Bezawork, Afomiya’s mother, tiredtold she worries a lot about the center’s problems right now. ‘’I knew my daughter had a cardiac problem from age one. She had the surgery waiting three long years. I am very grateful for the free service we got from the center. The change in my daughter is greatly incredible. Before the surgery she didn’t play like she wanted to since she would get tired quickly, her appetite was very low and her physical growth was also limited; she was very thin.” Tigest says she was distressed to hear about the center’s financial crisis. “I beg all Ethiopian citizens and the Ethiopian government to help this very important Cardiac center.” she says.

Established in 1992 inside Zewditu Memorial Hospital the Cardiac Center – Ethiopia is now located inside Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) here in Addis Ababa. It has a new building initiated by Dr. Belay Abegaz which started functioning in 2009.

*Takele Yinabete who comes from Bahir Dar with his three year old son told Addis Standard that he was waiting for his son’s turn ever since he was referred at the center from Bahir Dar in the infant age of his son . “I here am waiting for our turn on a follow up. I don’t know the exact time when the surgery will be done, but we will wait for that exact date."
" I heard that the cardiac center is going to stop functioning soon from lack of budget though. Children are the future hope of our country and I urge everybody to help the center. From my experience, children don’t make their pain known. Everybody should help the center according to their capacity; even contributing one birr with their mobile. "
"Let us save one child's heart.
