Is demographic rift in the making in rural Ethiopia?
I have been working on a large national research project (Ethiopia) and, while analyzing household population data, I became curious about the population structure by age and s*x. In reviewing the results, two age groups stood out: 20–29 and 40–49 years.
There is a significant s*x imbalance:
• 20–29 years: Female-dominated (44% more females than males)
• 40–49 years: Male-dominated (56% more males than females)
This raises important questions:
• What is happening to males aged 20–29 in those woredas?
• What is happening to females aged 40–49 in those woredas?
Understanding the underlying reasons—such as migration or other demographic factors—is crucial to prevent or mitigate the potential negative impacts of this s*x imbalance, including:
• Social crises: Marriage-related challenges, family disruption (divorce, polygamy)
• Mental health issues: Widespread loneliness among men, increased harassment or vulnerability among women
• Economic instability: Labor market distortions, strained social safety nets
• Unplanned urbanization
