Speech, language communication and swallowing disorders happen due to conditions such as head and neck anomalies - cleft lip and /palate, hearing loss, stroke, neurological diseases, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, autism and other neurodevelopment disorders which without re/habilitation are debilitating, disempowering and socially isolating. Moreover communication difficulties in young children prevent access to education with consequently limited opportunities for acquiring a job which requires communication as a basic pre-condition. Adults who have communication deficits often lose their jobs with serious financial impact on their families. Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) supports these children and adults with communication disability to integrate in the society, achieve their education and access employment.
We have been working towards filling this gap – very limited access to SLT professional services in our country by initiating local training program of Speech-Language Therapy professionals. Finally Bachelor of Speech-Language Therapy program at Addis Ababa University (AAU) is approved and the speech therapy center at Yekatit 12 Hospital, Medical College is collaborating with AAU to run this training. The University will open a post for qualified SLTs in lecturer and/ clinical educator position meanwhile we appreciate any kind of volunteer services and/assistance to facilitate and run this program. Please be part of history of SLT profession development in Ethiopia-Africa.
