Ethiopian Midwives Association

Ethiopian Midwives Association Working to promote midwifery and reduce child and maternal mortality rates in Ethiopia since 1992.

The association currently has 1,300 members (as of October 2012) and is the only professional body representing midwives in Ethiopia. Presently it has five branch offices in regional areas of Ethiopia. EMA has been a member of the International Confederation of Midwives since 1993 and participates in regional and international conferences on child and maternal health.

EMwA undertakes a variety of projects throughout Ethiopia to improve health outcomes. Current projects include participating in the Ministry of Health’s National Action Plan on Advocacy in Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health; conducting professional training for pre-service and in-service midwives; promoting midwifery as a career option for students; and representing the interests and rights of its members. All EMA activities are aimed at increasing awareness of maternal and child health and improving the quality of care available for these vulnerable groups.

General information

EMA works in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, UN agencies and donor organizations to make a contribution to reducing maternal and child mortality by improving the quality of reproductive health services at a grass roots level. It is a key participant in Ethiopia’s commitment to improve health outcomes under Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.
