Cyclone Gezani has affected nearly 500,000 people in eastern Madagascar, destroying over 25,000 homes and displacing more than 20,800 people.

The African Union deployed a Humanitarian Assessment and Solidarity Mission to the hardest-hit areas, including Toamasina and Toamasina II, to support urgent response efforts, alongside a USD 200,000 recovery fund.

As climate-related disasters grow more frequent, preparedness and coordinated action matter more than ever.

For too long, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, mental health conditions, and road injuries have grown into some of the continent’s leading causes of death and disability, without receiving the policy attention they demand.

African Heads of State have now taken an important step to change that. The African Union Common Position on NCDs, injuries, and mental health places these issues at the centre of Africa’s development, economic, and health security agenda, not as secondary concerns, but as priorities requiring whole-of-government action.

Africa CDC’s correspondence in The Lancet Group outlines what this landmark commitment means and what implementation must deliver for communities across the continent.

The commitment is clear. The priority now is implementation.

Africa has set an ambitious target: producing 60% of the health products it needs locally by 2040. Reaching it requires the right foundations, and that is exactly what this Forum was designed to build.

In March, Africa CDC and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance convened African Union Member States, NRAs, manufacturers, African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA) investors, and key partners for the African Manufacturing Pre-Marketplace Forum — driving high-level dialogue on market readiness, regulatory pathways, sustainable financing, and supply–demand alignment toward a politically-led, economically sustainable African manufacturing ecosystem.

A major step forward for Africa’s public health systems.
Africa CDC, in collaboration with African Union Member States and partners, officially launched the SPARK–NCD Programme in Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania — a flagship continental initiative to strengthen surveillance, intelligence, and response to non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The programme will support Member States to strengthen surveillance systems for NCDs, injuries, and mental health; build a skilled public health workforce; integrate NCD data into national decision-making; and advance integrated, people-centred care.
The launch also built on evidence from Tanzania and Uganda showing that integrated HIV and NCD services can be safe, equitable, cost-effective, and improve access without compromising outcomes.

Africa CDC remains committed to working with Member States and partners to advance resilient, data-driven, and integrated public health systems across the continent.

In 2020, Africa CDC launched a continental platform to coordinate community health engagement during COVID-19. Today, that platform has evolved to support Africa’s broader public health priorities.

In August 2025, Africa CDC brought together African Union Member States and partners in Kigali to revamp the Public Health Risk Communication and Community Engagement Community of Practice, broadening its scope beyond pandemic response to include social and behaviour change, vaccine demand, and long-term health resilience. In October, leadership structures were re-established across all five of Africa CDC’s Regional Coordinating Centres.

This week, the Eastern Region held its first progress review, bringing representatives together with Africa CDC to reflect on progress, identify areas for improvement, and strengthen the way forward.

An Africa CDC-led platform, this initiative reflects a shared commitment to building stronger, more community-centred public health systems across the continent.

Digital civil registration systems are essential to legal identity, stronger public health systems, and inclusive development.

Last week in Namibia, Africa CDC and the Government of the Republic of Namibia launched a joint learning visit on e-Birth Notification and Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems, bringing together technical teams from Ethiopia, Senegal, and Botswana.

Hon. Lucia Iipumbu, Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, emphasised the foundational role of CRVS systems in advancing legal identity, inclusive development, and public health.

Hon. Dr Esperance Luvindao, Minister of Health and Social Services, underscored that digital transformation is not just about technology, but about reshaping service delivery to provide timely, coordinated, and data-driven care.

Namibia’s homegrown digital system for real-time birth and death registration demonstrates how interoperable, people-centred solutions can transform health planning and service delivery across Africa.

Africa CDC hosted a workshop with the African Health Catalyst Forum (AHCF) to explore ways to better engage the diaspora and the private sector in strengthening health systems under the Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS) Agenda’s focus on sustainable health financing and private sector engagement (Pillar III).

The workshop focused on advancing sustainable, African-led investment by mobilising the diaspora and strengthening private sector engagement in Africa’s health transformation.

By making health financing more predictable, innovative, and collaborative, Africa can take greater ownership of its health future and move from dependence to true sovereignty.

From wastewater to public health intelligence.

Earlier this month, Africa CDC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health- Uganda, convened experts from 9 African Union Member States — Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, The Gambia, Kenya, Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zambia — in Kampala to strengthen capacity in Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance (WES).

The training went beyond theory, combining laboratory and field-based learning with practical applications in genomics, bioinformatics, and data analysis to support public health decision-making.

Participants contributed to the draft Africa Continental WES Strategy (2026–2030) and developed country action plans to integrate WES into national surveillance systems.

Grounded in a One Health approach, this work reinforces the importance of cross-sector collaboration in strengthening early detection of pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging health threats.

We thank the Uganda Ministry of Health and partners for their leadership and collaboration.

Every 30 seconds, a baby is stillborn in Africa — a silent crisis that demands urgent action.

Launched by Africa CDC and partners at the International Maternal Newborn Health Conference, the State of Africa’s Stillbirths Report highlights the scale of the crisis, its drivers, and the actions needed to prevent these tragic losses.

The report calls for urgent action across the continent: every stillbirth must be counted, reviewed, and prevented whenever possible.

Africa CDC, in collaboration with the University of Zimbabwe, has successfully concluded a 2-week Mental Health Leadership short course.

Bringing together 30 participants from 14 African Union Member States, the course strengthened capacities in leadership, advocacy, multisectoral collaboration, and media engagement.

It concluded with high-level discussions with Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care, Friendship Bench, and Succeed on advancing community-based mental health support and reinforcing the importance of cross-sector partnership in building stronger mental health systems.
