We’re celebrating a truly special moment for the CURE Ethiopia family!
Dr. Leul Merid Atnafu — CURE Ethiopia’s first fellow and Ethiopia’s 2025 COSECSA FCS Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery graduate — was honored for earning the highest score in his specialty board exam. An incredible achievement!
What touched everyone even more was seeing Dr. Leul arrive at the COSECSA graduation ceremony in Burundi with his mother by his side — a beautiful tribute to the support, sacrifice, and faith she had in him.
From all of us at CURE Ethiopia: Congratulations, Dr. Leul! We’re grateful to be part of your journey.

CURE Children's Hospital of Ethiopia, in partnership with Transforming Cleft recently held a Cleft Lip and Palate Family forum. The primary objective of this forum was helping patients and their families reconnect, share experiences, and support one another. The forum encouraged patients to engage through dedicated social media platforms (telegram channel and group discussion) where they could openly discuss the challenges they have faced and the ways in which they have overcome them. This event also served as an important platform to bring families together with Comprehensive Cleft Care (CCC) professionals. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the importance of receiving continuous and multidisciplinary cleft care. Families were encouraged to ask questions and seek clarification on any issues that had not been fully understood during their treatment journey. The audience included the Cure Comprehensive Cleft Care team, along with distinguished specialists who have been involved in cleft care for more than two decades. Among them were Dr. Mekonnen, a senior cleft surgeon, and Dr. Shiferaw, an experienced orthodontist, both of whom shared valuable insights from their long-standing professional experience.

Adem was born in a remote Ethiopian village, several days' travel from CURE Children's Hospital of Ethiopia. He was born with a leg condition that turned his feet backwards and robbed his body of the strength needed to stand up on his own feet. Because of his condition, Adem walked on all fours, making him an easy target for the bullies in his community. They would shout "baboon" after him when he walked by.
But while his condition set him apart from all the other kids, Adem still needed to help his family, and like the other boys in his community, it was his responsibility to herd the family's cows and goats. He did this on all fours, literally scaling mountains in the process!
However, Adem underwent several corrective surgeries at CURE Children's Hospital of Ethiopia and walks upright for the first time in his life!

Hundreds of thousands of children live with treatable disabilities in the countries where CURE International works — not because a cure doesn’t exist, but because care is out of reach.

That's why CURE International exists! To provide sponsored surgeries to kids for whom treatment would be otherwise impossible.
That's the mission right there!

Hundreds of thousands of children live with treatable disabilities in the countries where CURE works — not because a cure doesn’t exist, but because care is out of reach.

That's why CURE exists! To provide sponsored surgeries to kids for whom treatment would be otherwise impossible. And to share the Gospel right alongside meeting the physical needs.

Heal the sick, and proclaim the Kingdom of God.

That's the whole mission right there!

CURE Children's Hospital of Ethiopia recently held its 16th Spine Surgery Week, with visiting pediatric spine surgeon Dr. Victoria Kuester, who returned to perform life-changing spine surgeries on children with scoliosis

Joining her were Orthofix representatives Schrynel D'Mello and Thabo Ngwenya, who supported our team in learning to use the 7D Navigation System for Spine Surgery — the first of its kind in Ethiopia!

This innovative system enhances precision during surgery by creating a real-time, 3D image of the spine, enabling surgeons to navigate complex procedures with greater accuracy. It also significantly reduces radiation exposure for both patients and medical teams, making spine surgeries safer and more efficient.

We're grateful for this incredible collaboration and excited to continue transforming the lives of children with spine conditions through advanced surgical care.

All of the countries where CURE serves face a shortage of specialized surgical teams for children. And in every country where we serve, we invest in training up local surgeons to do the same work God has tasked us to do. By training medical staff and partnering with local health institutions, we get to play just a small part in changing the healthcare landscape for generations to come!

Health equity begins when basic surgical services for children are available in places too often forgotten. By offering sponsored pediatric surgery in the nations where we work as well as investing in the national health infrastructures, we're getting closer and closer to a God-honoring world where where you are born doesn't determine your ability to receive life-transforming surgery!

Our Story:

Opened in 2008, the hospital is a state-of-the-art complex that provides modern medical and surgical care to physically disabled children. As Ethiopia consistently ranks among the poorest countries in the world, with few of its citizens having access to medical care, there is a great need for this level of care.

In addition, CURE Ethiopia fills a critical need as an orthopedic training site in the country, providing didactic and clinical training in pediatric and advanced orthopedic techniques, and is an international COSECSA-accredited training site.

Through a combination of in-hospital care, mobile clinics, and clubfoot clinics, CURE Ethiopia is providing superior care for the children of Ethiopia.
