Voices of Healing – Project Conclusion Roundtable in Jigjiga

As part of the final phase of the _Voices of Healing_ project, CYRO hosted a half-day stakeholder roundtable in Jigjiga to reflect on key achievements and lessons learned.

This event marks the conclusion of a series of impactful activities, including:
* Community-Based Storytelling and Dialogue Sessions in Jigjiga and Goday.
* Documentation and Production of Advocacy Tools to amplify local voices.
* Stakeholder Engagement to promote inclusive peacebuilding and empowerment.

With support from CEHRO, this initiative has strengthened youth and women’s participation in shaping resilient, peaceful communities across border regions.

Together, we celebrate the voices, stories, and solutions that emerged and commit to sustaining the momentum for healing and change.

Mental Health & Psychiatric First Aid Training.

CYRO successfully completed a transformative two-day training aimed at equipping staff and local partners with essential skills to identify, respond to, and support individuals experiencing mental health and psychiatric challenges. This program enhances the reach and quality of _community-based psychological first aid_, ensuring that care is accessible, compassionate, and effective.

Together, we are building a resilient and well-supported community.

Community-Based Storytelling and Dialogue Session
Held in Godey, organized by Children and Youth Relief Organization (CYRO) with support from the Consortium of Ethiopian Human Rights Organizations (CEHRO)

Today’s session in Godey provided a safe and inclusive space for community members to share personal stories centered on human rights, healing, and reconciliation. Through open dialogue, participants fostered empathy, mutual understanding, and trust across diverse backgrounds. The event strengthened community resilience and emphasized the power of local narratives in advancing justice and collective healing.

CYRO Participates in Discussion on the Reform of the Civil Society Joint Declaration

The Children and Youth Relief Organization (CYRO) participated in an important forum organized by SONSAAC, which focused on reviewing and reforming a Joint Declaration that guides the work of civil society organizations in the region.

The forum served as an opportunity for organizations to exchange information, share perspectives, and collectively reflect on the potential impact of the declaration.

Analysis and Preparation of a New Magazine to be Published by the Somali Region Victims Network.

On 13–14 September 2025, we participated in a workshop focused on reviewing and developing a magazine initiated by Conciliation Resources (CR) and to be published by the Somali Region Victims Network. The magazine aims to spotlight the voices and experiences of victims in the Somali Region. During the workshop, we examined the content of the articles, editorial structure, and ways to amplify victim voices effectively.

Following the workshop, we visited Jail Ogaden to gather firsthand information on the conditions of detainees — a key step in ensuring the accuracy and credibility of the stories that will be published.

Youth Leading the Way: Somali Youth Agenda in Progress

Today, CYRO proudly participated in and facilitated the Inclusive Youth Dialogue for Peace and Development (IYD4PD) workshop held at Istanbul Hotel in Jigjiga.

In collaboration with ybuntu Youth Peacebuilding Alliance and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), this important gathering brought together more than 50 youth representatives from Jigjiga and several districts of the Somali Region.

The session focused on drafting the Somali Youth Agenda: a youth-driven vision for peace, development, and inclusion. As CYRO, we facilitated group reflections and supported young voices in identifying priorities and solutions relevant to their communities.

We believe in youth leadership, and today was a powerful step toward building a shared and inclusive future for the Somali Region.

CYRO – Official Statement

April 6 Officially Recognized by Somali Regional Parliament as the Victims' Memorial Day

Today marks a historic moment for justice and remembrance. The Somali Regional State Council has officially passed a resolution declaring April 6 as the Victims' Memorial Day for the 2017 Atrocities in the Somali Region.

This milestone is the result of persistent advocacy led by the Organization of Victims and Survivors and other members of the Somali Region Victims Network (SRVN), including CYRO, Hormud women's organization and Himilo, with dedicated support from Conciliation Resources. The initiative was formally taken up by the Truth-Seeking, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission of the Somali Region as part of its official mandate.

CYRO proudly welcomes this resolution as a victory for all victims and their families who have tirelessly advocated for acknowledgment, justice, and healing.

We stand committed to ensuring this day is honored annually, as a platform for truth-telling, reflection, and collective commitment to lasting peace and justice.

Deepening Partnerships and Localizing Peacebuilding Efforts

Today, CYRO's leadership continued its strategic engagement in Addis Ababa, meeting with national and international partners committed to advancing peace and locally led development.

🔹 Life & Peace Institute (LPI)
In the morning, we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Belayneh Mazengiaw, Ethiopia Country Manager at LPI. We shared updates on CYRO’s ongoing peacebuilding and conflict resolution initiatives in the Somali Region. The discussion was highly productive and reaffirmed the importance of collaboration in advancing sustainable peace at the grassroots level.

🔹 Humanitarian National CSOs Forum
In the afternoon, we met with Mr. Sisay Dejene, Executive Director of the Forum. The conversation focused on the importance of localization and building the capacity of local, community-rooted organizations. Mr. Sisay emphasized the Forum’s commitment to ensuring that national and local NGOs are meaningfully included and empowered to lead humanitarian efforts across Ethiopia. We deeply value this shared vision of amplifying local voices and leadership in crisis response.

These meetings reflect our ongoing commitment to strengthening partnerships that support peace, resilience, and inclusive development for children and youth across the Somali Region and Ethiopia at large.
