"PTERYGUIM" a common degenerative ocular (eye) condition/disorder.

Pteryguim, also called surfer's eye is a pinkish, roughly triangular tissue growth of the conjunctiva encroaching onto the cornea of the eye. Often both eyes are involved, or it's usually occurs bilaterally.

CAUSES/RISK FACTORS

Pteryguim is mostly associated with
- excessive exposure to UV lights
- wind
- sunlight, or sand.
- Therefore, it is more likely to occur in populations that inhabit the areas near the equator, as well as windy locations. In addition, pteryguim are twice as likely to occur in men than women.

SIGNS/SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of pterygium include:
- persistent redness
- Inflammation of the conjunctiva
- Feeling of foreign body sensation in the eyes
- Tearing
- Dry and itchy eyes.
NB: In advanced stages, the pterygium can affect vision as it invades the cornea with the potential of obscuring the optical center of the cornea.

PREVENTION

- Wearing protective sunglasses and Wide brimmed hats in areas with strong sunlight
- Using Blue light blocking glasses which protects the eyes from UV radiations
- Using artificial tears throughout the day may also help prevent their formation or stop further growth.

TREATMENT

The only treatment option for pterygium is SURGERY.
Typically Pteryguim does not require surgery unless it grows to such an extent that it obstruct the visual axis or causes visual problems.
Some of the symptoms such as irritation can be addressed with artificial tears.

Ensure you visit an eye clinic at least twice a year for comprehensive eye examination.
