Casagrande Laboratory is a Finland based multidisciplinary research & design company operating on the field of built human environment. M.

Casagrande Laboratory cross-over architectural work encompasses the realms of architecture, urban and environmental planning, environmental art, and other artistic disciplines. Cities become complex energy organisms in which different overlapping layers of energy flows are determining the actions of the citizens, as well as the development of the city. By mixing environmentalism and urban design, C-LAB develops methods of punctual manipulation of the urban energy flows in order to create an ecologically sustainable urban development towards the so-called “Third Generation City”. This organic machine is kept alive through continuous and spontaneous ruining processes performed by its citizens: the “anarchist gardeners” (cit. Casagrande) by means of urban farming, illegal architecture, and urban acupuncture. The element of “ruin” is viewed as something man-made having become part of nature. We are inspired by nature and human nature. C-Lab is one of the world leading organization working on theories and practices of what has been defined the “Third Generation City” and the “Urban Acupuncture”: a methodology which uses the flows of information and communication in the city to identify "pressure points" which enable to achieve large results through localized interventions. Marco Casagrande, founder of C-LAB, is the major social theorist and architect recognized worldwide for his contribution to the conceptualization of Urban Acupuncture and the Third Generation City. The widely published works have been exhibited three times in the Venice Architecture Biennale (2000, 2004 and 2006) and in Havana Biennale 2000, Firenze Biennial 2001, Yokohama Triennial2001, Montreal Biennial 2002, Puerto Rico Biennial 2002, Demeter Hokkaido 2002, Alaska Design Forum 2003, Echigo-Tsumari Triennial 2003, Taipei on the Move 2004, London Architecture Biennial 2004, Sensoria Melbourne 2004, Taiwan Design Expo 2005, Urban Flashes Mumbai 2006, 7-ELEVEN City 2007, World Architecture Festival 2009, Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennial 2009 and 2012, Victoria & Albert Museum 2010, Beaufort Triennial of Contemporary Art 2012, Austrian Museum of Contemporary Art MAK 2013, Buenos Aires Architecture Biennale 2013 and China Central Academy of Fine Arts CAFAM Biennale 2014 among others. Set along the natural slope between forest and lakeshore, the building follows the existing terrain rather than altering it. The elevated volume allows the ground plane to remain continuous, preserving the site’s geological and ecological integrity.

This spatial strategy minimizes physical intervention while maintaining an uninterrupted relationship between land, light, and structure. Seasonal change and shifting light conditions remain integral to the architectural experience.

Casagrande’s design positions the building as part of the landscape’s ongoing continuum. Architecture does not impose itself upon the site, but emerges from its existing order.

Villa Ristinselkä is located along a remote shoreline of Lake Päijänne in central Finland, in proximity to the Haukkavuori escarpment. The terrain, formed by glacial withdrawal, is defined by exposed granite, boreal forest, and open water. The escarpment rises abruptly from the lakeshore, establishing a geological presence that predates human occupation.

The site carries a quiet historical continuity. In July 1976, Queen Elizabeth II visited the nearby escarpment during a state visit hosted by President Urho Kekkonen. The landscape remains materially unchanged, preserving the event not as artifact, but as part of the enduring condition of the place.

The architecture, designed by Finnish architect Marco Casagrande, is conceived as a measured response to this context. Rather than imposing form upon the landscape, the structure is positioned as a temporary inhabitation within a much older continuum. Casagrande’s approach rejects architectural autonomy, allowing terrain, light, and seasonal change to define the experiential framework.

The building is composed of restrained volumes and precisely calibrated openings. Glazed surfaces establish continuity between interior space and the surrounding environment, allowing the atmosphere of the forest and lake to permeate the architecture. Material expression is intentionally quiet, enabling the structure to recede into the tonal and spatial order of its surroundings.

Here, architecture does not seek visual prominence. Its permanence derives instead from alignment with the processes and rhythms of the landscape itself.

Villa Ristinselkä exists as part of an ongoing continuity between geology, memory, and habitation.

Hermanninrannan uusi puinen ja vähähiilinen asuinalue toteuttaa Helsingin kaupungin kestävän kehityksen tavoitteita kansainvälisestikin poikkeuksellisen kunnianhimoisella otteella. Kehittymässä on suomalaisen luontolähtöisen kaupunkirakentamisen lippulaivahanke, jossa rakennettu ihmisympäristö on vuorovaikutteinen osa laajempaa alueellista ekosysteemiä. Finsk arkitekt återuppbygger Ukraina: ”Vi bygger trots att bomber faller hela tiden”

…Här satsar man på återuppbyggnad mitt under brinnande krig. Borde man inte vänta på att bombningarna upphör?
Casagrande skrattar lite och konstaterar att bomber exploderar hela tiden.
– Nästa bomb kommer hela tiden. Här väntar man inte på något. Att man i Finland talar om att återuppbyggnadsarbetet börjar först när kriget är slt – det är struntprat. Återuppbyggnaden börjar direkt när ett hus förstörs. Man väntar inte.

Men vad händer om det man just byggt förstörs av bomber nästa dag?
– Då bygger man upp på nytt.
Casagrande säger att han inte har varit med om något särskilt dramatiskt.
– Inget speciellt, men ur vårt perspektiv är varje dag dramatisk. Där är jag ändå bara en av en miljon människor, och bomberna faller hela tiden.
– Återuppbyggnaden är kontinuerlig och ukrainarna uppskattar de som är på plats.
