Sipoonjoki Heritage Sauna 🔥 Sipoonjoki Heritage Sauna 🎙️ Spirit of Sauna podcast

Our dear Saunafellow explains the elements of the smoke sauna. It all starts with air. 🌬️

”Air comes first. 🌬️

Before the crackling fire, before the red-hot stones of the kiuas, before the purifying water, there is air.

How it moves, how it feeds the fire, how it carries the heat
this is where a smoke sauna begins. Get this wrong, and nothing else works!

Welcome to the Smoke Sauna Basics series. 🔥”

Something interesting happened in the US. 🇺🇸

A local YMCA banned throwing water on the sauna heater.

In Finland, people reacted quickly. The Brentwood Family YMCA comment section filled up, and even Harvia joined the discussion with practical advice.

The easy conclusion would be this: Americans just don’t understand how sauna works.

But there’s a deeper story behind this, and it’s not entirely flattering for us Finns.

Finns were the ones who originally brought electric sauna heaters to the US. Early models didn’t always handle water very well.

That’s how the habit of sauna without löyly was born. And once a habit takes root, it becomes the norm.

Here’s a Saunafellow’s take on this week’s sauna case.

So what is it, really? Saunafellow explains!

Our sauna host Otto has also launched an English-language account. 🔥

If you’re interested in sauna beyond the surface from an international perspective, follow Saunafellow in Instagram.

” 👋🏻 Otto Kronqvist here, a philosopher and historian by training.

I’ve been in the sauna for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories are from the sauna in my childhood home.

For over 20 years, I’ve been drawn to public saunas.
When I first moved to Helsinki, there were only three left in the entire city.

Back then, the rooftop sauna of my apartment building became my own “public sauna”. It was a place where I met friends, strangers, and even future business partners.

For the past five years, I’ve been running a traditional public smoke sauna in Sipoo, near Helsinki.

Together with my team, we heat the “altar of löyly”, carrying wood and water and keeping things running, 360 days a year, for all kinds of people.

On this account, we go deeper into sauna. We explore its ancient roots, current practices, the ritual of heating a smoke sauna, and everything that lives around it.

If sauna speaks to you beyond the surface, you’re in the right place.”

Happy day after the spring equinox 🌞

The season has turned, and from here on the light slowly begins to take more space. Last night the sky greeted us in a truly special way. The final löyly had been thrown, the yard had gone quiet, and then it happened. Dancing northern lights filled the sky, here in Sipoo. 😮

Seeing the aurora this far south is rare, especially at this time of year. You can’t really plan for moments like this!

Could there be a better way to welcome the return of the light 🙏🏻

New episode of the Spirit of Sauna podcast is out! 🎙️

In this episode, we step into the world of the hidden folk. Many traditions speak of unseen presences in the landscape, beings that live in forests, waters, and even in the sauna stove itself. Finns know them as maahiset, haltiat, and the sauna’s own guardian spirit, the saunatonttu.

Across cultures, invisible forces are often given human form. It seems natural for people to approach the powers of nature as living presences. In Ireland, for example, the little folk are considered real even by many who would not describe themselves as spiritual. In Finland, the custom of leaving the last löyly for the sauna spirit can also be read as practical wisdom. Many old sauna guidelines carry this same dual nature. They acknowledge unseen guardians while also teaching respect, patience, and care in a powerful environment.

What can we learn from the way ancient cultures related to their surroundings? Perhaps there is a hidden intelligence in the hidden folk that could still guide us in modern life. And perhaps the maahiset deserve a little more space in our thinking than we usually give them.

Spring is when you can work in just a hoodie without the whole shift turning into a survival battle. 😁 Now this spring weather truly feels good, and well earned after that harsh winter! 🥶

Spring is here and you can feel it everywhere. The sun is warming the land, the snow is slowly retreating from the fields, and there seems to be endless energy for all kinds of activity. 🌞

The smoke sauna is heating, as usual. Filming is also underway in our Rauni treatment sauna for a new ceremony concept. And also, Spirit of Sauna podcast is being recorded around the cottage table. Vihtas are moving, cameras are rolling, and steam rises from the löyly!

Spring carries a special momentum. Summer, we are on our way. 🔥

Our two-week Saunotus retreat came to an end on what was perhaps the last truly cold day of winter. ❄️

What an incredible two weeks it has been, filled with whisking, ceremonies, herbs, good food, and relaxed time together. ☺️ Learning, practicing, and simply being in good company, all woven together by powerful löyly.

Thank you, Darren, Susanne, and Eva. You are always warmly welcome back here in the Sipoo River Valley. 🙏🏻

In April we return with an Intro Course, and the next retreat will take place in June.
