The Sauna Healer retreat is underway, and some of the participants are completing all three retreats within just two weeks. 💪🏻

The days have been full, grounded, and joyful, both for the retreat group and for the sloooowly arriving spring. 😅

There has been a lot of whisking here, also with real guests during the weekend public sauna sessions. We have worked with technique, with the craft of sauna healing, and with the philosophy of the smoke sauna and ritual. Learning truly happens through doing!

Today we explored the herbs used in different sauna treatments. Heather and nettle have been prepared and worked with, their qualities becoming familiar through practice. We have whisked with both birch and oak vihtas, feeling the differences in rhythm and effect. The work is also leading toward Thursday’s peat sauna ceremony, which we are already preparing for step by step. 🔥

Tomorrow we will heat the smoke sauna together and revisit the whisking teachings from last week, deepening what has already been learned. There has also been time for relaxed sauna bathing together, sharing quiet moments and simple conversations. In the darkening evening there is something truly magical, and more than once it has felt like we are in a ”thin” place. ✨

Above all, there is a strong sense of gratitude. For the people, for the shared work, for the tradition, and for the chance to do this together!

At the sauna, the cycle of the year is felt in every cell of the body. That’s why we decided to create a four-part series about the seasons here in the Sipoonjoki river valley. Our first post a few weeks ago focused on summer, and after the height of the season, our gaze inevitably turns toward autumn. 🍂

Autumn in the Sipoonjoki valley is full of hues and scents. Birch leaves turn yellow, the oak in the yard glows in shades of red and orange before finally letting go of its leaves. The air cools, and the riverbank groves fill with the damp aromas of soil, decaying wood, and fallen leaves.

Walking toward the sauna, your steps rustle across a carpet of leaves. The nose catches the sweet scent of decomposing earth and the deep, dark aroma of moisture rising from the river. Meadowsweet has already withered, and nettle will soon follow.

The bathers change too. Conversation softens, and gazes linger longer on the landscape. Stepping out from beneath the ground, the warmth of the löyly feels especially gentle against the cool air. The darkness of autumn settles like a blanket, reducing the contrast between the outside world and the dimly lit sauna.

Autumn here is a threshold season. It holds neither the severity of winter nor the lightness of summer. After the quiet months of summer, sauna sessions are often peaceful, allowing time to listen to the wind moving through the trees along the river. Autumn is a time when the land lies resting, yet inside the smoke sauna there is a warm hollow to curl into, like a bear preparing to welcome winter.

The soot-clearing löyly rises, and the whole valley fills with steam. 🙏🏻

Our sauna host Otto was invited to Ireland as a guest of Peter and Karl at Tigh ’N Alluis - Irish Sweat House. Four days were spent exploring remarkable ancient sites, and of course, sharing good sauna sessions. 🔥

The contrast is quite something, coming from the Irish rain and temperatures close to ten degrees straight back to thirty degrees of Finnish frost. There is beauty in both!

Thank you to our Irish sauna brothers for the warm hospitality. We hope to welcome you here in the Sipoonjoki Valley before long. 🇮🇪🇫🇮

The latest episode of Spirit of Sauna is out now! 🎙️

In this episode, we return to the roots of sauna. Every meaningful sauna experience begins in the forest. Firewood, herbs, vihtas, even water; all of it comes from the land that surrounds us.

We talk about what has been lost when the forest is removed from sauna. With the rise of electric saunas, convenience often replaces connection. But is ease really the most important part of the sauna experience?

We also share how, in our courses, we explore the cycle of the year through the forest. Participants learn to work with vihta as a living tool for cleansing, activation and renewal.

At the sauna, the cycle of the seasons can be felt in every cell. That’s why we’ve decided to create a four-part series about the seasons here in the Sipoo River Valley. And naturally, we begin with the one we’re longing for most right now: summer. 💚

In summer, nature in the Sipoo River Valley bursts into full bloom. Birches turn pale green, bird cherries blossom in white, and rowans soon follow. The riverside groves become lush with green, and the air fills with the scent of damp earth and woodland herbs.

On the path to the sauna, the sharpness of spruce needles mixes with the sweetness of meadowsweet and the freshness of young birch leaves. Before long, nettle and fireweed join in, creating a heady symphony of scents.

The bathers, too, are at their brightest. There’s a lightness to their steps, and conversations flow easily. The steam feels sharp against the summer heat, like a wave of fire. But luckily, the cold plunge pool is there to cool you down to the core.

Summer is also our quietest time of the year.
You can often enjoy the sauna in peace, even on weekends. Sitting in the warm water, you can hear the wind in the trees and, if you’re lucky, the song of a nightingale performing from a nearby branch.

Just wonderful to finally have a proper winter here in the Sipoo river valley! ❄️

First came all the snow, and then the biting cold. It’s hard work getting everything ready for the sauna sessions, but no doubt it’s all worth it in this beautiful setting.
