I haven’t been on here in a while… for the past few months I have been laying low while processing the loss of my mom, who passed away from complications following a fall in September.
Even before that fatal event, I had been getting more and more interested in fall prevention as both of my parents have suffered from multiple falls these last few years. Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults 65 and over and the second cause of unintentional deaths worldwide according to the WHO.
The ability to get up and down off of the ground in is a skill that people of all ages can develop to prevent injuries or even death… (whom I had the great pleasure to hear speak last month at the ) is a great advocate of this skill - check out her book UNBREAKABLE 💪🏼
A June 2024 study in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that adults aged 45 to 75 who could get up and down off of the floor skillfully had a longer lifespan. In the vinyasa yoga practice, we see many variations on the now famous sit-to-stand longevity test (see link in bio for more on that). I have been integrating more and more floor-to-feet exercises in my classes as they are functional movements that integrate power, strength, flexibility, and cardio!
Here I share with you 5 versions of ways to get up and down off the floor, including what I’m calling « functional sun salutations » and some sequences similar to the movements in the « jump-through jump-back » vinyasa in the ashtanga practice.
Please enjoy and keep practicing for your health, longevity, and life 🙏🏼🙏🏼
