The top six publicly traded dealership groups all reported declines in gross profit per new vehicle in the third quarter of 2025, and experts expect a year-over-year decrease in the fourth quarter.

The dealership groups’ new-vehicle gross profit per unit decreases in the third quarter ranged from Sonic Automotive Inc.’s 1.5 percent to AutoNation Inc.’s almost 19 percent.

New-vehicle gross profit per unit is typically higher in the fourth quarter because dealership groups often sell a larger percentage of luxury vehicles, said Jeff Lick, managing director at analyst firm Stephens Inc. But robust numbers in the fourth quarter of last year benefited from post-election demand and incentives from the automakers, Lick said.

American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. plans to invest $133 million to upgrade a Southwest Michigan plant as automakers, including its largest customer General Motors, boost U.S. production amid costly tariffs.

The Detroit-based automotive supplier will make capital improvements to the building 160 miles West of Detroit in Three Rivers while adding and updating its assembly lines, enabling the company “to remain competitive with its ability to secure new OEM contracts,” according to a briefing memo from the Michigan Economic Development Corp.

The Michigan Strategic Fund approved on Oct. 28 a five-year 100 percent SESA Exemption tax break valued at $979,000 for the project.

There are no job creation or retention commitments being made for the plant, which employs around 1,100 people, said Erik Wilford, managing director of business development projects for the MEDC. However, American Axle is hopeful the investments will spur new contract awards.

Tesla shareholders approve $1 trillion pay plan for Elon Musk over the next decade, endorsing his vision of morphing the EV maker into an AI and robotics juggernaut.

The proposal was approved at the company’s annual shareholder meeting on Nov. 6 with over 75 percent support.

Musk took to the stage in Austin, Texas, along with dancing robots. “What we are about to embark upon is not merely a new chapter of the future of Tesla, but a whole new book,” he said. “This really is going to be quite the story.”

He added: “Other shareholder meetings are like snoozefests, but ours are bangers. I mean, look at this. This is sick.”

Shareholders also reelected three directors on Tesla’s board and voted in favor of a replacement pay plan for Musk’s services because a legal challenge has held up a previous package. Shareholders also voted in favor of a proposal asking the board to hold annual elections for all board members.

The vote, analysts have said, is a positive for Tesla’s stock, whose valuation hangs on Musk’s vision of making vehicles drive themselves, expanding robotaxis across the U.S. and selling humanoid robots, even though his far-right political rhetoric has hurt the Tesla brand this year.

A win for Musk was widely expected as the billionaire was allowed to exercise the full voting rights of his roughly 15 percent stake after the automaker moved to Texas from Delaware, where a legal challenge has held up a previous pay rise.

Bilateral deals could replace the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the backbone of regional auto trade among the three countries, industry analysts and trade experts said.

“One potential outcome of the USMCA review will be different arrangements with Canada and Mexico moving forward,” said Felix Stellmaszek, leader of Boston Consulting Group’s automotive practice. “I would not be surprised if we’re heading in that direction.”

Such an outcome would cause a major reordering of the North American trade landscape. The U.S., Canada and Mexico have operated under the same set of rules for trade since the North American Free Trade Agreement took effect in 1994.

The three countries trade about $2 trillion in goods annually, nearly one-quarter of which is automotive, according to estimates by the Office of the United States Trade Representative. The region’s auto industry built 16 million vehicles in 2024 and employs millions of workers who design and produce autos and supply parts.

The region’s auto manufacturing has evolved to reflect the rules laid out in NAFTA and its successor, the USMCA. But upcoming negotiations between the three countries could radically change how auto manufacturers approach product and investment plans in the region. Read more:

Q3 auto retail earnings: Net income down at 4 of 6 public auto retailers amid economic struggles in North America and the U.K.

Group 1 Automotive Inc., Penske Automotive Group Inc., Lithia Motors Inc. and Sonic Automotive Inc. reported a decrease in net income year over year in the third quarter of 2025.

Only AutoNation Inc. and Asbury Automotive Group Inc. saw net income grow year over year. AutoNation attributed the growth to increased vehicle sales and Asbury’s acquisition of Herb Chambers Cos. boosted its results.

Meanwhile, challenges in the U.K. bogged down Group 1’s results, and higher medical costs hurt Sonic. Penske and Lithia attributed their losses to broader economic factors.

Dealership acquisitions and dispositions also were a key discussion topic for some of the top publicly traded dealership groups as they reported their third quarter earnings results.

Group 1 acquired a top Mercedes-Benz dealership in the U.S. but is putting a pause on any further acquisitions in the U.K. Lithia acquired two stores it estimates will bring in a combined $220 million in annualized revenue. Asbury, still buoyed by its recent Herb Chambers acquisition, also sold four stores in the third quarter.
