💭When the municipality of Smiltene placed cultural heritage at the heart of its SUD strategy, they were faced with a critical question: How could they ensure an integrated approach and effectively engage stakeholders in the management and protection of historical properties?
Thanks to the Peer Review, they found the answers. CIM Coimbra, Portugal, shared its experience in setting up a structured management group with shared responsibilities.

☑️𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁?
Smiltene established a Heritage Working Group - now actively updating heritage data with all available information. They are also aiming to become the main platform for coordinating and planning municipal cultural heritage.

Smiltene and Kavala are also now preparing a City-to-City Exchange application on Heritage Renewal, building on the cooperation initiated during the Peer Review and further developing the recommendations received.

The new EUI Policy Lab report identifies a four-stage pathway followed by cities that successfully increased walking and cycling.

It shows that active mobility succeeds when cities:
1️⃣build strong institutional foundations
2️⃣redesign streets for people
3️⃣changing travel behaviour to increase the use of active mobility
4️⃣scale solutions beyond pilot projects

Across Europe, cities became real-life laboratories for urban innovation.

Between 2014 and 2020, the Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) Initiaitive supported cities to step outside business as usual and test innovative, unproven solutions to some of Europe’s most pressing urban challenges – from social inclusion and climate transition to economic transformation.

That’s why UIA was set up in 2015 under the EU Cohesion Policy. It turned cities into laboratories, giving urban authorities the freedom to test bold, untested solutions at real scale.

Today, this legacy continues through the European Urban Initiative (EUI), ensuring that local innovation helps shape the future of sustainable urban development in Europe.

🚀 From ideas to concrete actions — Peer Review 13 concludes today in Joensuu, Finland 🇫🇮

Over the past two days, cities under reviews, experts, and peer reviewers have come together to refine strategies, exchange knowledge, and strengthen the implementation of Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) across Europe.

This Peer Review brought together three cities under review — Joensuu (FI), Pärnu (EE), and Saue (EE) — working on key topics such as funding sources, governance, stakeholder involvement, citizen participation, and sustainable mobility.

This Peer Review combined strategy presentations, breakout discussions, interactive sessions on funding, study visits, reflection workshops, and the drafting of concrete recommendations leading to the cities’ final proposals.

Supported by the SAT4SUD self-assessment tool, each city has explored how to improve its strategy from design to implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Following the Peer Review, they will receive personalised reports with practical recommendations and support to pursue a City-to-City Exchange — a further step toward achieving their goals.

📢 If your city is also looking to learn from peers, tackle complex challenges, and accelerate its sustainable urban strategy, now is the time to act.
Join our applicants webinar on 18 March to learn more about Peer Reviews opportunities: https://urban-initiative.pulse.ly/j2a1nd8go4

👏 Thank you to the Mayor of Joensuu, Mr. Jere Penttilä, for welcoming us, and to all our speakers, participating cities, and experts for their valuable contributions!
