𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲’𝘀 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀! 🌍

The European Commission has just published the #𝗘𝗨𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮4𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, a renewed and coordinated vision that places cities at the heart of Europe’s green, digital and social transitions.

✨𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲.

The Agenda recognises the central role of EUI in supporting cities, with the upcoming 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 4. With an indicative 60 million EUR ERDF to support around 30 projects, Call 4 will help cities pilot solutions that respond directly to the challenges highlighted in the new Agenda.
In addition, the Commission is launching the 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗸, 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗼, to help cities navigate EU tools, funding opportunities, and operational support ensuring that innovative ideas can turn into practical, real-world urban projects.

What this means for urban authorities:
✔️ stronger links between EU priorities and local innovation
✔️ easier access to guidance, knowledge, and funding
✔️ more opportunities to test bold, future-oriented ideas tailored to local needs

🗨️Every city has a story, and sometimes, the next chapter starts with another city.

With City-to-City Exchange, urban practitioners discover how peers approached challenges like yours:
🚲 How a small city shifted to cycling,
🌱 How a district turned into a green corridor,
🤝 How neighbourhood participation changed a local strategy...

These visits create meaningful connections that transform the way teams work, design and implement policies. (Your city chooses its partner(s).)

🏘️𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥 — 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞?

👉 That spirit guided our EUI Focused Policy Lab on access to funding, where cities, experts and practitioners came together around one powerful insight: 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙪𝙣𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙠 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙞𝙣 𝙥𝙞𝙥𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨.

From Oradea (🇷🇴) to Rotterdam (🇳🇱), Burgas (🇧🇬) to Brussels (🇧🇪), a clear pattern emerged:
When cities align 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲, 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲, investment doesn’t just arrive — it grows, repeats, and multiplies through revolving, blended and impact-driven models.

🌟Because cities don’t thrive when funding is treated as a transactional tool — they thrive when it becomes part of a broader strategy, rooted in vision, creativity, and the right support ecosystem.

We’ve gathered all insights, examples and recommendations into a new report — a practical guide for cities ready to evolve from traditional grant applicants to true investment-ready leaders.

Across Europe, cities are learning that redesigning streets is the easy part — changing habits is the real challenge.
During the EUI Policy Lab’s early research, one message appeared again and again:
👉 𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 — 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨, 𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢.

This insight came to life in Hamburg, where city representatives explored real examples from Brussels to Turku, Pombal to Faenza. What stood out? Cities that engage residents early — listening, co-designing, and showing visible benefits — are the ones breaking through the “car mentality.”

🇮🇪Wrapping up 2 inspiring days in Monaghan Town!

The European Urban Initiative (EUI) event “Reimagining Places: Sustainable Conservation of Ireland’s Beautiful Heritage – An EUI Capacity Building Event under THRIVE and beyond” brought together staff from Ireland’s 31 local authorities and other key stakeholders at the Monaghan Peace Campus.

🏛️Over the course of the event, participants explored how to integrate preservation, conservation, and sustainable adaptive reuse approaches into the detailed design stage of their THRIVE Strand 2 applications, as well as into future projects at national or European level.

🛠️The programme featured key moments including a THRIVE progress update, a powerful keynote on “Beauty, Sustainability, Belonging: A New European Bauhaus Vision”, and a panel discussion on adaptive reuse and lessons from THRIVE implementation. Attendees also took part in parallel workshops focused on operational and governance solutions for creative regeneration, and joined site visits across Monaghan to see local examples in action.

👏A warm thank you to everyone who contributed and participated to this event!

👀Stay tuned for more insights and next steps!
