Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after shoulder arthroplasty remains a complex and sometimes underestimated problem.
Many of us instinctively associate shoulder infections with Cutibacterium acnes.
But real-world data may be more nuanced.
The SECEC Prosthetic Joint Infection Registry is a multicenter European initiative involving 20 sites across Europe, designed to better understand the epidemiology, management, and outcomes of shoulder PJI.
So far, nearly 300 infections have already been collected, making it one of the largest dedicated datasets on this topic.
One interesting early observation: only about 50% of prosthetic shoulder infections were positive for C. acnes.
This highlights how important it is to continue collecting robust multicenter data to better guide diagnosis and treatment strategies.
If you are interested in learning more about the registry or contributing to this collaborative effort, you can find details here via the link in the bio.
Collaborative registries like this are essential if we want to move beyond assumptions and build evidence-based strategies for shoulder PJI.
