Slowdown Farm

Slowdown Farm A small sustainable farm nestled in the rolling Bretagne countryside cultivating fresh food and alternative ideas for health and happiness. We are Emily & Iain.

We purchased Chef de Ville in April 2016 after falling in love with its charms over the internet. It happens to the best of us. It is an old farmhouse in central Brittany. There’s a house with garage, several outbuildings, and a modest amount of land that includes a small orchard, bread oven, water well and untold relics and historic treasure. We are a UK couple in search of a slower pace of life and a new place to call home. Somewhere to take deep breaths, long walks and longer sleeps. A place to grow our own food, host our friends and family and remove life’s unnecessary pressures. So this is the story of how we went from conventional lives in the UK, to living the good life in France – or so we hope. This is real life, there are no guarantees of a happy ending. Join us on our journey. The highs, lows, mistakes and successes. And tears, aplenty.

After two years on the tools, it's a good time to recap where we're at now and what comes next.

As we mark our second year in France, it seems apt to look back and ask, was it all worth it?

"It feels bizarre but it’s almost as if the various past chapters of my life were all a training exercise to set me up to live here."

Chapter 12: Living on the farm isn't easy. Luckily we have a lifetime of skills to help us get by.

Slowdown Farm

We’re Emily and Iain. After 20 years together in the UK we sought a radical life change from 9-5 jobs, endless bills and scant leisure time. So we drafted an escape plan and in 2016 put it into action.

Now, in our attempt to live the good life, we are in France renovating an old farm back from the brink in a sustainable and low-impact way; with a lot more time available than money.

This is our journey. Follow in real-time as we settle in another country, become self-sufficient and try to survive on little money. Maybe our story will inspire you to make any changes you yearn.

Everything we publish is available for free, without ads, affiliations or paywalls. If we’ve entertained or inspired we hope you’ll consider supporting us. Without your help, we are nothing.
