Coming to America: Reflecting on Three Transformative Years Across Europe with the BondFire Project. What do I actually do?

In June 2021, I embarked on a journey that not only shifted the trajectory of my career but also reshaped my perspective on health, community, and resilience. I relocated to Europe to expand the Relationship Society BondFire Project, an initiative focused on Trauma-Informed Spatial Computing XR Therapy, from the Omniverse for the Metaverse, under the ethos "Health is Social. Restoring Social Capital."

Strategic Partnerships and Innovation
One of the cornerstone achievements of my time in Europe was establishing a strategic partnership with WEAR Studio, based in Kyiv, Ukraine (wear-studio.com). This collaboration was pivotal as it laid the groundwork for our expansive projects. Together, we meticulously crafted robust startup business plans, conducted comprehensive market research, and developed the foundational branding and XR Therapy designs and protocols that would define the BondFire Project.

This partnership was not merely transactional but a collaborative effort aimed at deepening the integration of trauma-informed practices within technological solutions. WEAR Studio's expertise in digital design and interactive media was instrumental in bringing our vision to life, ensuring that the therapeutic tools we developed were not only innovative but also deeply empathetic and responsive to the needs of those experiencing trauma.

The collaboration also provided an invaluable opportunity to refine our approach to XR therapy, ensuring that it was grounded in the latest research and best practices in trauma care. This synergy between cutting-edge technology and trauma-informed care principles has set a new standard in the field, demonstrating the potential for technology to play a transformative role in mental health therapy.

By merging our expertise with WEAR Studio's capabilities, we were able to push the boundaries of what is possible in XR therapy, creating engaging, effective, and compassionate therapeutic experiences that stand at the forefront of the industry. This strategic partnership has not only fueled our growth but also reinforced our commitment to innovating responsibly, with a deep understanding of the profound impact our technologies can have on individuals' lives.

Humanitarian Efforts Amidst Conflict
The war in Ukraine brought with it unimaginable challenges and hardships, starkly highlighting the profound need for trauma-informed care within conflict zones. Amidst the turmoil, I made the decision to remain in Ukraine from February 24th to June 26th, both during and after the conflict, to contribute directly to humanitarian efforts.

One of the most heartwarming and impactful endeavors during my time in Europe involved a young Ukrainian boy from Kyiv. At just nine years old, he was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a serious cancer that required specialized medical treatment unavailable locally. Understanding the urgency of his situation, we initiated a fundraising campaign and successfully raised $5,000. This effort enabled us to transport him to a hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, where he could receive the necessary medical care. Thanks to the generosity of donors and the effectiveness of the treatment, I am overjoyed to report that he is now in 100% recovery. This experience not only highlighted the power of community and international cooperation but also underscored the profound impact of our humanitarian efforts on individual lives.

One of the pivotal initiatives we undertook was the relaunch of the Matisse Art for Kids program. This program was specially adapted to the circumstances, taking place in underground locations such as metro stations, World War II-era bomb shelters, and below-ground restaurants in both Odessa and Kyiv. These spaces, though not originally intended for such use, became sanctuaries where children could find psychological relief and express themselves creatively.

Through this program, we were able to reach over 500 children, providing them with $1500 worth of art supplies. This not only offered them a temporary escape from the stress of their environment but also a means to process their experiences through art. The therapeutic value of creative expression in managing trauma is well-documented, and by facilitating these activities, we helped foster a sense of normalcy and safety for these children during incredibly turbulent times.

The impact of these efforts goes beyond just the immediate benefits of engaging the children in art. It also played a crucial role in community building and resilience-enhancing within these makeshift shelters, helping to maintain a sense of community and shared strength among the displaced families. These activities were not just art classes; they were a lifeline, a small but significant beacon of stability and hope in the midst of chaos.

Educational Initiatives and Health Support
Amidst the adversity brought on by the conflict in Ukraine, we recognized the urgent need to support the local communities not only through humanitarian efforts but also by empowering them with essential skills and services. The BondFire Project took a multifaceted approach to this, launching several key initiatives to aid Ukrainian refugees and enhance their quality of life during these trying times.

In a groundbreaking collaboration with renowned relationship experts Harville and Helen Hendrix, we embarked on a project to create a Ukrainian version of their acclaimed "Safe Conversations" methodology, tailored specifically for teaching English to Ukrainian refugees. This initiative aimed to not only enhance language skills but also to facilitate healing through improved communication. The Hendrixes' method, which focuses on fostering connection and understanding through dialogue, was an ideal framework for helping refugees navigate the emotional challenges of displacement while learning a new language. By integrating the principles of Safe Conversations into our language teaching, we provided a dual benefit: empowering refugees with the ability to express themselves clearly in English and equipping them with communication tools that enhance interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being. This culturally adapted program was designed to be sensitive to the specific needs and experiences of the Ukrainian community, providing them with a supportive space to learn and heal.

The BondFire Project Online English Program
One of our major educational initiatives was the BondFire Project Online English Program. This program was designed to help over 100 Ukrainian refugees enhance their language skills, which was crucial for improving their employment prospects and facilitating everyday communications in an increasingly globalized world. The ability to communicate effectively in English opens doors to international job markets and is a vital skill for refugees looking to rebuild their lives in new countries.

Empowering Ukrainian Refugees and Polish Nationals: A Month of Language and Cultural Integration in Poland's Zakopane Mountains and beyond…
In a transformative educational initiative, I had the opportunity to teach English to Ukrainian refugees and Polish nationals for a month, collaborating with Anglo Ville in various locations across Poland. We began this enriching journey in the picturesque Zakopane mountains, a setting that not only provided a serene backdrop but also facilitated a conducive learning environment. This program was designed to empower participants by enhancing their language skills, crucial for broadening their professional opportunities and easing their integration into new communities. The classes focused on practical language use, including constructing resumes and preparing for job interviews, as well as everyday conversational English. This experience was not just about language acquisition but also cultural exchange and building a sense of community among the participants, helping them forge new beginnings in challenging times.

Trauma Relief in Transit: Teaching Tapping Solutions to Ukrainian Refugees During Their Escape from Conflict
Amid the chaos, and upheaval of the war in Kyiv, Ukraine, I embarked on a mission to offer immediate, trauma-informed support to refugees as we journeyed together away from the conflict. I thought, hmmm, trauma-relief on the Go with Joe. Utilizing trains and restaurants as impromptu classrooms, and with the aid of an English translator, I taught over 250 refugees the practices of Tapping Solutions and the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). These methods, known for their simplicity and effectiveness, were chosen specifically to help manage anxiety and trauma symptoms related to the war. EFT, in particular, involves tapping on specific points on the body associated with energy meridians, which can quickly reduce the intensity of emotional distress. This intervention aimed to provide refugees with easily accessible, self-help tools to cope with the overwhelming stress and trauma they were experiencing daily, fostering resilience in the face of adversity.

Staging Facility in KyivUnderstanding the immediate needs of the refugees, we established a staging facility right in the heart of Kyiv. This facility was not just a temporary shelter but a comprehensive support center providing a range of essential services. We facilitated health check-ups to ensure the well-being of the refugees, many of whom had been displaced under stressful and unhealthy conditions.

Partnerships with Local Airbnb HostsTo address the critical need for safe accommodation, we partnered with local Airbnb hosts. This collaboration allowed us to secure temporary housing for refugees, providing them with safe places to stay during the upheaval. These accommodations were not merely roofs over their heads but safe havens where they could find some peace and plan their next steps.

Transportation and Additional Support ServicesThe staging facility also served as a hub for other vital services, including secure transportation arrangements to safer locations or border crossings, particularly important for those seeking refuge in neighboring countries. Additionally, we provided assistance with clothing, food, and even legal services to help refugees navigate the complexities of their situations.

Through these initiatives, the BondFire Project not only addressed the immediate physical needs of the refugees but also empowered them with skills and resources that are essential for long-term resilience and integration into new communities. This holistic approach to support during crises is fundamental to our mission of fostering health and social capital, even—and especially—in times of conflict.

Groundbreaking Research and International Collaboration
My journey also took me into the realms of academic research. Working with Dr. Hanna Osuch, we delved into a Trauma-informed XR Therapy project for dental phobia, among other medical anxieties, laying groundwork that could revolutionize therapeutic approaches in highly stressful environments.

During my time in Europe, with almost a year in Krakow, Poland, staying in proximity to our work in Ukraine, I delved deeply into the effects of generational trauma, a poignant chapter of which is encapsulated by the tragic histories of World War II and the Soviet era. My research took me to places steeped in sorrow like Auschwitz, where the echoes of the past provided profound insights into the long-term impacts of trauma that transcend generations. This exploration into historical trauma greatly informed our approach to understanding and treating modern anxieties associated with health care, such as dental phobia, and fears related to blood, needles, and medical procedures. Collaborating with Dr. Hanna Osuch, we have been pioneering trauma-informed XR therapies aimed at addressing these fears. This innovative approach integrates our historical understandings of trauma with cutting-edge technology, offering more compassionate and effective treatments that acknowledge the deep-seated fears that can be traced back through generations.

Groundbreaking Research and International Collaboration

Dr. Osuch's deep understanding of patient anxiety and her innovative approaches to managing it are integral to our project, ensuring that our therapeutic methods are both clinically relevant and grounded in compassionate care practices.

Trauma-Informed XR Therapy for Dental Phobia
Under Dr. Osuch’s guidance, our project is exploring how XR technology can be utilized to simulate dental environments, allowing patients to face and overcome their fears in a controlled, safe setting. This therapy aims not only to alleviate anxiety during actual dental visits but also to equip patients with lasting strategies to manage their fears, ultimately enhancing patient engagement and improving overall dental health outcomes.

This collaboration exemplifies how combining clinical expertise with cutting-edge technology can lead to significant advancements in healthcare. Dr. Osuch's dedication to dental education and her advocacy for patient-centered care enrich our research, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in trauma-informed therapeutic practices.

Bridges to Wholeness: Navigating Conflict and Healing in Self and Society

In the dynamic history of human existence, the recurring theme of conflict, both external and internal, weaves a complex narrative that shapes our journey towards growth and healing. Central to my narrative is the recognition of the interconnectedness of conflicts, from the global stage to my own deeply inner and personal realms owns or our inner selves. We will explore the profound idea that to heal the wars ravaging our world, we must first address the wars raging within us and between us, particularly between the sexes. Through this exploration, we uncover the transformative power of acceptance, reflection, and community in our evolutionary process. This dynamic process of discovery gained from the wisdom won by pain and experience is that in any conflict, there are multiple dimensions occurring simultaneously. No one dimension can explain the entire conflict.

Healing the War Within and Between the Sexes

“To heal the war in the world, we must heal the war between the sexes. To heal the war between the sexes we must heal the war within ourselves." Ottoman

The assertion that healing the war in the world necessitates healing the war between the sexes, which in turn requires healing the war within ourselves, invites us to consider the cyclical nature of conflict and healing. This cycle suggests that global peace and harmony begin with individual and interpersonal transformations. For instance, consider the story of Amina and Thomas, a couple whose relationship was caught up in a vicious cycle of confusion, misunderstandings and power struggles, reflecting broader societal gender conflicts. Their journey towards reconciliation began with introspection and a willingness to confront their inner demons, biases, and fears. By acknowledging and working through their personal conflicts, Amina and Thomas not only healed their relationship but also contributed to the broader narrative of healing between the sexes. Their story exemplifies the ripple effect of personal transformation on collective healing.

You Are the Architect of Your Evolutionary Process

Embracing the role of architect of our evolutionary process empowers us to actively shape our journey of growth and enlightenment. This principle is illustrated in the story of Maya, who, after years of feeling victimized by her circumstances, realized that she had this “New Agency” of power and freedom to choose something different and to change her narrative. By accepting responsibility for her reactions and choices, Maya transformed her life from one of suffering to one of purpose and fulfillment. Her story teaches us that while we may not control every aspect of our lives, we can control how we respond and evolve.

Accepting the Worst Parts of Ourselves

The journey towards wholeness requires us to confront and accept even the darkest parts of ourselves. The story of Alex, who struggled with anger and self-loathing, underscores this truth. It was only when Alex stopped denying and fighting his darker impulses and instead sought to understand and integrate them that he found peace. This acceptance did not mean condoning harmful behaviors but rather acknowledging his flaws as part of his human experience. Alex's story reminds us that self-acceptance is a critical step in our evolutionary process.

Conflicts as Teachers

“Your conflicts are your greatest teachers. By design they are the very irritant that forms the pearl of your enlightenment” Unknown

Our conflicts, no matter how painful, serve as invaluable teachers. The conflict between Lena and her coworker, which initially seemed insurmountable, eventually became the catalyst for Lena's personal and professional growth. Through this conflict, Lena learned the importance of empathy, communication, and setting boundaries. Yep, even if you think setting a boundary is going to kill you. This experience illustrates how conflicts, by challenging us, can stimulate profound personal development and enlightenment, ergo, never waste your pain.

The Reflective Universe

The principle that we live in a reflective universe, where we receive what we put out, ergo, the karmic shuffle, is vividly demonstrated in the transformation of Sam, who harbored resentment and mistrust towards others. When Sam began to approach the world with kindness and openness, he noticed a dramatic shift in how others responded to him. This change reinforced the idea that our external experiences often mirror our internal states and intentions.

Healing in the Context of Relationship and Community

The belief that I share with Harville Hendrix is that “we are all wounded in relationship and healing occurs within the context of relationships” and communities is exemplified by the BondFire Project healing circle initiative in a small town. This initiative brought together individuals from Ukraine and from diverse backgrounds to share their stories of war, anger, loss, grief, betrayal, conflict and healing. Through this collective experience, participants discovered the power of vulnerability, support, and shared humanity in healing personal and communal trauma wounds of war with new bonds.

The journey towards healing the wars in our world, between the sexes, and within ourselves is a dynamic process of self and other discovery. It requires us to embrace our role as architects of our evolutionary process, to accept all parts of ourselves, to view conflicts as opportunities for growth, and to acknowledge the reflective nature of our universe. Moreover, it underscores the importance of relationships and community in our healing journey. By seeking to remove the barriers we have built against love, Rumi, we open ourselves to the transformative power of connection, understanding, and peace. Through stories like those of Amina, Thomas, Maya, Alex, Lena, Sam, and the BondFire healing circle, we are reminded that our greatest challenges also hold the key to our most profound growth and healing.

Ciao!
