Today, Her Majesty The Queen reaches an historic milestone, becoming the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.

Her Majesty acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952 on the death of her father King George VI, and this year marks a record-breaking 70 years of service.

Whilst the Queen's Accession to the throne occurred on 6th February 1952, her Coronation did not take place until 2nd June 1953 in Westminster Abbey.

As soon as King George VI died on February 6, 1952, aged 56, Elizabeth officially became Queen – this is known as her accession. So while she acceded the throne at 25, she was not crowned until at age 27, sixteen months after.

The reason why Accession Day is a quiet day of reflection, rather than a day of partying and celebrations, is that it marks the anniversary of the death of Her Majesty’s father.
