“For women starting their careers, my advice would be to remain curious, open to learning, and willing to embrace challenges. Early in your career, exploring different areas of public health can help you discover where your interests and strengths lie.”

As we continue to mark International Women’s Day, our latest Women in Lung Health profile features Dr Garima Bhatt, a public health expert, and Conference Programme Lead for The Union's To***co Control Section. Garima’s work focuses on to***co control and non-communicable diseases research and policy.

Look out for more later this week, as we celebrate the women making an impact in lung health through their contributions, dedication, and expertise.

“Women are Nature's quintessence of ‘give to gain’. We still have to face prejudice and fight for recognition in many contexts.”

As part of activities marking International Women’s Day, The Union is proud to launch Women in Lung Health. A series highlighting women across the global lung health community and the impact of their work in research, care and advocacy.

The first profile features Prof Anete Trajman, a leading expert in TB prevention and care, and Local Chair of the upcoming The Union World Conference on Lung Health in Rio de Janeiro. Anete’s work spans research, teaching and global collaboration in lung health.

More profiles will be shared throughout the week, celebrating the women making an impact in lung health through their contributions, dedication, and expertise.

For several years, The Union has been advocating for the implementation of community-wide screening, based on three scientific facts:

1️⃣ All TB disease occurs in people who have acquired TB infection from someone else with infectious TB.
2️⃣ Most TB disease results from recent transmission, not remote past reactivation.
3️⃣ More than half of people with active TB have no symptoms yet remain infectious.

🏠 For the first time we have the World Health Organization recommendation to place same day testing in the community.

📉 Using these tools alongside our ability to fully treat people at home, while tracking their progress and ensuring treatment completion, will enhance our ability to break the chain of TB transmission and lower healthcare costs in high-burden settings.

There are no more excuses.

👅 We are also encouraged by the recommendation of tongue swab testing, as this will help ease community-wide sample collection, but we need more research into how they can be used most effectively to reduce TB incidence in the real world.

🤝 Greater coordinated action to reshape the global response to chronic respiratory diseases.

In the first issue of IJTLD Chronic Respiratory Disease (IJTLD CRD), José Luis Castro and co-authors from World Health Organization (WHO), describe the major gaps that persist in the response to CRDs.

They state that there is room for optimism, as “lung health is rising to the top of global agendas”. While identifying the “launch of IJTLD CRD as a catalyst for change, helping to democratise knowledge, and accelerate the flow of evidence to reshape policy and improve clinical care.”

🌏 Closing the gap on chronic respiratory disease – The Union is proud to launch IJTLD Chronic Respiratory Disease (IJTLD CRD).

A new open access journal focused on chronic respiratory diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Over 4 million people die due to CRDs each year, with the greatest burden seen in LMICs. Yet studies in high-income countries dominate the research literature. There is a lack of detailed information on the scale of the growing problem in LMICs.

Hugh Blackbourn, Director of Publications at The Union: “Our aim is to raise the profile of CRDs, to mobilise civil society and encourage researchers, clinicians and policymakers to provide effective support for the millions who lack appropriate care.”

This new journal strengthens our commitment to end suffering due to lung disease by providing an open access platform dedicated to chronic respiratory health, with equity at its core. Because breathing should not be a privilege.
