An adult with shock ingrained in their system from Birth Trauma (or other childhood traumas) will not only be struggling harder physically and mentally with every day life, but will also be more powerfully affected by subsequent shocks – which will all the more readily add layer upon layer of further shock to their already predisposed system. Their system will be more readily activated, and they will react more readily to every incident, accident or trauma.

Birth trauma ingrained into the system at such an early age not only creates many direct symptoms and effects but can also makes everything in life more of a struggle, making it harder for the individual to cope with all aspects of life, and conditioning the individual to react more strongly.

The shock of birth trauma is a profound and fundamental effect, with far reaching consequences affecting so many of us, to a greater or lesser extent. It can affect everything about our lives and is consequently a fundamental theme in the whole understanding and treatment of birth, babies, children – and the adults who develop from those babies and children.

If the shock is not cleared from the system, then it sets all of our patterns for the future. For the most part it is not addressed, released or dealt with – and hence the widespread consequences of Birth Trauma that we see all around us.

Fortunately, in Cranio-Sacral Therapy we have what is probably the most effective means of treating shock and releasing it from the system, CST has the potential to transform lives.

Le plexus brachial

Ever wondered what the nerval connection between your brain and your arms looks like? You can see it in this awesome photograph of the so called brachial plexus :)

The brachial plexus is responsible for cutaneous and muscular innervation of the entire upper limb except for the trapezius muscle and an area of skin near the axilla. It is the pathway for every informational exchange between your brain and the muscles of your arms and hands.

Lesions thus of course lead to severe functional impairment of the upper extremity. Cutting the brachial plexus would be like cutting a cable to an electric device, no information from the brain/power supply would reach the device.

The brachial plexus is divided into Roots, Trunks, Divisions, Cords, and Branches. It makes it kind of rough to learn but the organization of this nerval structure is amazing!

Here is a schematic illustration of the brachial plexus:

🔊 SCIATICA

WHAT IS SCIATICA?

💡 Sciatica is the result of a neurological problem in the back or an entrapped nerve in the pelvis or buttock. There are a set of neurological symptoms such as:

➡️ Pain (intense pain in the buttock)
➡️ Lumbosacral radicular leg pain
➡️ Numbness
➡️ Muscular weakness
➡️ Gait dysfunction
➡️ Sensory impairment
➡️ Sensory disturbance
➡️ Hot and cold or tinglings or burning sensations in the legs
➡️ Reflex impairment
➡️ Paresthesias or dysesthesias and oedema in the lower extremity that can be caused by the irritation of the sciatic nerves (the lumbar nerve L4 and L5 and the sacral nerves S1,S2 and S3)

CAUSES OF PAIN

💡 Pain is a result of irritation of the sciatic nerve. it can be constant or intermittend. The pain may be worsened by certain movements like coughing or sneezing (these movements increase the intra abdominal pressure). Sitting, bending, prolonged standing or rising from a sitting position can aggravate or increase the pain.

PAIN PATTERNS

💡 In regards to relief the pain, the supine position decreases the pressure on the herniated disc and will subsequently decrease pain. Pain is located along the distribution of the nerve and can be felt in the back, buttocks, knee and leg. It only radiates to one side of the leg and can result in reduced power, reflexes and sensation in the nerve root. Also gait dysfunction (toe walking, foot drop and knee buckling), paresthesias or dysesthesias are frequent neurological symptoms.

SYMPTOMS BASED ON NERVE COMPRESSION

💡 Sciatica can be caused by the compression or irritation of nerve L4, L5, S1, S2 and S3. The sciatica symptoms depend on which nerve is compressed or irritated.

◾ L4: When the L4 nerve is compressed or irritated the patient feels pain, tingling and numbnessiIn the thigh. The patient also feels weak when straightening the leg and may have a diminished knee jerk reflex.

◾ L5: When the L5 nerve is compressed or irritated the pain, tingling and numbness may extend to the foot and big toes.

◾ S1: When the S1 nerve is compressed or irritated the patient feels pain, tingling and numbness on the outer part of the foot. The patient also experiences weakness when elevating the heel off the ground and standing on tiptoes. The ankle jerk reflex may be diminished.

The myodural bridge (MDB) connects the suboccipital musculature to the spinal dura mater (SDM) as it passed through the posterior atlanto-occipital and the atlanto-axial interspaces. The bones which attach directly to the membrane system form one of the four anatomical structures of the cranio-sacral system, these are:

All the bones of the cranium
The second and third cervical vertebrae
The sacrum
The coccyx

Bones are the most evident, tangible, solid component of our bodies and therefore provide the most obvious visible framework around which to explore the cranio-sacral system. They are also the component which first attracted William Sutherland’s attention in developing the cranial concept, through his observation of the bones of the cranium as an osteopathic student.

The scarily awesome view of a child's skull shows the teeth inside the mandible waiting to replace the baby teeth! :D

Also there are some interesting traditions about milk teeth. Here are some of them:

The Sri Lankan tradition is to throw the milk teeth onto the roof or a tree in the presence of a squirrel (Funambulus palmarum). The child then tells the squirrel to take the old tooth in return for a new one.

In Pakistan, children bury their teeth on their roof or in their garden in the hopes of a new sibling.

In English-speaking countries, the tooth fairy is a popular childhood fiction that a fairy rewards children when their baby teeth fall out. Children typically place a tooth under their pillow at night. The fairy is said to take the tooth and replace it with money or small gifts while they sleep.

In some parts of India, young children offer their discarded baby teeth to the sun, sometimes wrapped in a tiny rag of cotton turf.

The tradition of throwing a baby tooth up into the sky to the sun or to Allah and asking for a better tooth to replace it is common in Middle Eastern countries (including Iraq, Jordan, Egypt and Sudan). It may originate in a pre-Islamic offering and certainly dates back to at least the 13th century.

In premodern Britain, lost teeth were commonly burnt to destroy them. This was partly for religious reasons connected with the Last Judgement and partly for fear of what might happen if an animal got them.
