“Jie Jia Xiu Zhen” - lit. Borrowing the false to Cultivate the True.
Taoist cultivation is the path of “borrowing the false to cultivate the true.” says, “The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao.” says, “If one hears the Tao in the morning, one may die in the evening.” The Tao is formless and nameless, gives birth to Heaven and Earth, and moves the sun and moon. It is the highest goal sought by Taoist practitioners throughout their lives.
The “false” refers to the physical body, formed by the temporary union of earth, water, fire, and wind – impermanent and ever-changing. The “true” refers to the eternal spiritual body that does not arise or perish. A cultivator uses the temporary body as a vessel, refining essence, energy, and spirit to return to the true self.
reads, “The true men of old did not dream when they slept, were not anxious when they awoke, and their breathing was deep and calm.” also records, “In ancient times there were true men who lifted Heaven and Earth, grasped yin and yang, breathed in pure energy, and guarded their spirit in solitude.” Such a true man unites with the Tao, free from obstruction, transcending life and death.
Although human beings are formed through the temporary union of elements, they inherently possess the nature of the Tao. By following the right path of cultivation, nurturing both life and spirit, and practicing virtue outwardly, one can return to the origin. When body and spirit become refined and the mind aligns with nature, every action follows the Tao.
The world of dust is but a field of trial. By keeping a calm heart and practicing non-action, one can borrow the false to cultivate the true, and through illusion realize the Tao – this is the way of the Great Path.
