recently welcomed Focal One - EDAP TMS, one of the few French companies actively developing technologies in .

Their innovative solution enables tumor destruction using HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound), guided by a robotized ultrasound imaging system. This technology has recently received FDA certification for prostate tissue ablation, and CE mark for the treatment of the prostate cancer and deep infiltrated endometriosis.

In the near future, IRCAD will benefit from the installation of one of these robotic systems. This will allow IRCAD’s R&D teams, in collaboration with EDAP engineers, to work on two major projects:
- The development of AI-based tools capable of automatically targeting tumors while preserving critical anatomical structures.
- The development of remote “teleablation” protocols, leveraging IRCAD’s advanced platforms dedicated to telesurgery procedures.

These initiatives illustrate the strong potential of between innovative industry partners and IRCAD’s research ecosystem to advance the future of minimally invasive therapies.

Our Story

IRCAD (Institut de Recherche contre les Cancers de l'Appareil Digestif / Research Institute against Digestive Cancer) was founded in 1994 within the premises of Strasbourg's University Hospital. It pools digestive cancer research laboratories, a research and development department in computer sciences and robotics, and a training centre in minimally invasive surgery. Every year, 6,200 surgeons, originating from 116 different countries, visit IRCAD to learn the latest surgical techniques. IRCAD has 2 exceptional operating platforms : one is equipped with 20 laparoscopic units, the other one is equipped with 21 robotic systems. IRCAD has become the world’s leader in education and training in minimally invasive surgery and opened three cutting-edge mirror institutes: in Taiwan in 2008, in Barretos/São Paulo in 2011 and in Rio de Janeiro in June 2017. Two new IRCAD centers opened: IRCAD Lebanon (Beyrouth) in 2019 and IRCAD Africa (Kigali, Rwanda) in 2020. With 4,273 international scientific publications and communications (March 2019), IRCAD is the world's number one in the fields of computer science, robotics, and medical imaging applied to minimal access surgery.
