My client wants a firm bum, more shapely legs and arms, and to tone up.
But she also doesn’t want to get “bulky.”
So I asked her…
Was she worried about looking as muscular like me?
Because she really has nothing to worry about.
She doesn’t have my genetics.
She hasn’t trained consistently for 10 years like I have.
She doesn’t train as hard as me.
Or as often as me.
And building muscle is a very slow process that takes time, patience and consistency.
Let me explain…
“Toning up” is usually a lay term that refers to looking lean… and well toned.
And that look comes from building muscle and reducing body fat, so you can actually see the shape of the muscle.
Can she build muscle and look toned?
YES. Absolutely 🙌💪
I work with lots of women, many of them over 40 who have changed the shape of their body through lifting weights.
But setting realistic expectations of what they will and won’t achieve is important.
My client has a great starting point.
She has good genetics and already has shape.
But she is new to lifting.
She’s learning to build confidence with her lifts.
Her training intensity is gradually increasing, which is great.
She is learning how to train hard.
And we’re taking advantage of this phase because she’ll make more progress now than someone like me who’s been training for years.
I told her not to fear lifting weights..
Building muscle means:
💪Feeling empowered
💪better health
💪a higher metabolism (muscle burns more calories)
💪more energy
💪clothes fitting better and more shape to your body
💪feeling stronger and capable in everyday life
💪improved posture, bone & joint health
💪ageing strong and independent.
This is what “toning up” actually looks like.
If you want to understand how to train, eat and approach your health in a way that actually works… I’ll be talking more about this (and so much more) at my Stop Starting Over Walk & Talk this Sunday. Message me for more details.
