“Be present on the mat”
“Listen to your body”
“Be fully in the moment”
These are commonly found sayings in yoga but what exactly do they mean and why is it important to “Be in the moment”.
When we practice yoga, we have an opportunity to utilise the movement of the body and control of the breath in order to quiet our mind. Taking our minds away from DOING mode and into BEING mode. It allows us to notice things around us or within ourselves that we may not have noticed before. Being in the moment is about bringing attention to the here and now, not the past or the future. The past and the future only exist in the mind. But why does this matter?
Well, studies have shown individuals who practice mindfulness and being in the moment have :
- Lower levels of perceived stress
- Improved mood
- Lower levels of anxiety and depression
- An overall improved sense of well being
Practicing this kind of awareness also allows us to see things with better clarity, meaning any challenges or obstacles we may come across throughout life, we are able to overcome them with more ease.
My Tuesday evening class is the perfect way to practice mindfulness. While the poses we explore improve strength and flexibility, we also take time to ground ourselves, to move intentionally and to become more at one with our mind and body.
