DAWN RADLEY: Myfyrfodau o Gymru / Reflections of Wales

DAWN RADLEY Reflections of Wales

From childhood I have always had an interest in all Arts.
Together with my late husband we ran a furniture making business using traditional methods and native timbers.
Following early retirement, I then had the time to explore my love of art, and was inspired living in rural Wales, close to the mountains and sea.
Over ten years ago I started to explore Linocuts and attended quite a few courses and joined a local art group.
I have progressed and enjoy doing Reduction Linocuts, particularly of the local area. The process takes longer, but I find the end result rewarding.
A few years ago I was given some Oil Paints, as a present, I enjoy exploring and using the pallet knife technique. The Oils are slow drying and that gives scope to alter or change things that I am not completely happy with.
I was always interested in Enamels, more recently I acquired a Kiln and have been producing Enamel tiles, using locally sourced Ferns and Seaweed.
The kiln has a magical influence on the finished piece.
I continue to explore this medium, as it sparks joy!

DAWN RADLEY Myfyrdodau o Gymru

O'r plentyndod, rydw i wedi bod â diddordeb ym mhob Celfyddyd erioed.
Ynghyd â'm diweddar ŵr, roedden ni'n rhedeg busnes gwneud dodrefn gan ddefnyddio dulliau traddodiadol a phren brodorol.
Ar ôl ymddeol yn gynnar, cefais yr amser i archwilio fy nghariad at gelf, a chefais fy ysbrydoli gan fyw yng nghefn gwlad Cymru, yn agos at y mynyddoedd a'r môr.
Dros ddeng mlynedd yn ôl, dechreuais archwilio Toriadau Lino a mynychu cryn dipyn o gyrsiau ac ymuno â grŵp celf lleol.
Rydw i wedi symud ymlaen ac yn mwynhau gwneud Toriadau Lino Gostyngiad, yn enwedig o'r ardal leol. Mae'r broses yn cymryd mwy o amser, ond rydw i'n gweld y canlyniad terfynol yn werth chweil.
Ychydig flynyddoedd yn ôl, cefais rai Paentiau Olew, fel anrheg, rydw i'n mwynhau archwilio a defnyddio'r dechneg cyllell paled. Mae'r Olewau'n sychu'n araf ac mae hynny'n rhoi cyfle i newid pethau nad ydw i'n hollol hapus â nhw.
Roeddwn i bob amser â diddordeb mewn Enamel, yn fwy diweddar, cefais Odyn ac rydw i wedi bod yn cynhyrchu teils Enamel, gan ddefnyddio Rhedyn a Gwymon o ffynonellau lleol.
Mae gan yr odyn ddylanwad hudolus ar y darn gorffenedig.
Rwy'n parhau i archwilio'r cyfrwng hwn, gan ei fod yn ennyn llawenydd!
BYD BACH ABER
Syniad y ffotograffydd Bruce Cardwell yw Byd Bach Aber, prosiect sy’n dathlu cymeriad unigryw’r dref arbennig hon ac amrywiaeth ein cymuned yn ystod y 2020au. Yn wreiddiol o Belfast, daeth Bruce Cardwell i Aberystwyth i astudio yn 1981, ac fel llawer cafodd ei swyno gan y dref a’i phobl. Fel un sy’n cyfaddef ei fod wrth ei fodd yn ‘gwylio pobl’, mae nod Bruce yn fwy na chofnodi’r bobl hyn yn unig. Wrth dynnu lluniau pobl, mae’n dathlu’r amrywiaeth fywiog a’r unigolion gwahanol yn ein cymuned. Wrth ddod ar draws ei destunau, mae darganfod eu straeon a meithrin hyder yn bwysig i Bruce wrth bortreadu eu personoliaeth. Mae gwahanol gasgliadau o ffotograffau Byd Bach Aber i’w gweld yn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru, Canolfan y Celfyddydau Aberystwyth, Amgueddfa Ceredigion, Ysbyty Bronglais ac mewn sawl siop a busnes ar hyd a lled y dref dros yr haf. Bydd hefyd cyfres o ddigwyddiadau a gweithgareddau’n cael eu cynnal i ddod â’r prosiect a’r arddangosfa’n fyw ar gyfer y gymuned ac ymwelwyr.

Byd Bach Aber - ‘Small World of Aberystwyth’ - is the brainchild of photographer Bruce Cardwell. The project celebrates the unique character of this special town and our community during the 2020s. Originally from Belfast, Bruce Cardwell came to Aberystwyth to study in 1981 and like many was charmed by the town and its people. As a self-confessed ‘people watcher’, Bruce’s aim is more than just recording people. Just recording people, he celebrates the vibrant individuality in our community. When encountering his subjects, discovering their stories and building trust is important to Bruce while capturing their personality. Different collections of the Byd Bach Aber photographs can be seen at The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Ceredigion Museum, Bronglais Hospital and many shops and business throughout the town over the summer. There will also be a series of events and activities to bring the exhibition and project alive to the community and visitors

Ceredigion on Canvas…….HAUL and HAHAV’s SPF funded arts project.

To celebrate the end of county-wide arts project, members of HAHAV’s Aberystwyth textile group present their ‘imagined landscape’ of Ceredigion. Created from learning about felting and using recycled material, this fantasy island is the work of weeks of experimentation and laughter.

Lead artist, Becky Knight said: ‘In response to a brief where we were asked to think about our relationship to where we live, out of ‘textile lands’ the group wanted to create something which combined the natural beauty of Ceredigion, its countryside and coast, but also have some fun, with myths. The island has its own dragon guarding it and a funicular railway created from old zips.’

The textile creation was one of 9 arts projects which saw HAHAV, a hospice at home charity and HAUL, a local Arts in Health organisation, work with vulnerable communities including people with life limiting illness, carers and the bereaved. The project was supported by the UK’s Levelling Up programme, the Shared Prosperity Fund for Mid-Wales and Ceredigion County Council.

Arts as therapy has been a practice since the 1940s. 80% of project participants said they felt improved wellbeing and a greater sense of connection as a result of taking part.

HAHAV’s Living Well Manager, Susie Scott said: ‘We really wanted to showcase the work our groups have produced. This project saw us working with many different arts from animation, photography, writing and illustration. Arts in whatever form enables people to express and communicate and in doing so, to be part of wider cultural conversations.’

HAUL’s Arts Facilitator, Bryn Jones commented: ‘This specific project enabled HAUL to work in partnership with HAHAV to create a successful and inspiring County wide arts project for people who don’t normally have this level of access to creative activities’

The ‘Cynefin’ exhibition will be at Ceredigion Museum, Aberystwyth until February 10th before it moves to the Guildhall in Cardigan.

A huge thanks from all at HAUL to the amazing Photographer, John Ibbotson who raised over £800 for HAUL Arts in Health through the sale of his two Calendars which features local ‘Sunsets’ and ‘Wildlife’ scenes. This will make a huge difference for HAUL to continue our work in the locality. The other Charity to benefit from his efforts this year was the Wildlife Trust.

Pictured below is John Ibbotson and Bryn Jones (HAUL Arts Facilitator) receiving his donation.

BYWGRAFFIAD
Rwy’n Athro Celf a Dylunio o Dregaron. Rwy’n defnyddio technegau argraffu amrywiol er mwyn cynhyrchu gwaith, yn ogystal â gweithio gydag olew, golosg ac aml-gyfrwng. Mae fy themâu yn amrywio ond fe ddaw fy nylanwad yn bennaf o’m treftadaeth Gymreig gref. Mae fy ngwaith yn cynnwys cymeriadau cefn gwlad Cymru, corau meibion a rygbi. Ers 2007 rwyf wedi cynnal sawl arddangosfa unigol yng Ngheredigion. Rwyf wrth fy modd yn cynhyrchu’r gwaith. Rwy’n gobeithio fod pobl yn gallu teimlo cysylltiad clir rhwng y gwaith a Chymru. Mae’r delweddau yn ddathliad o’r Gymru rwy’n ei weld ac mae’r delweddau yn tarddu o’m mhrofiadau personol yng nghefn gwlad, ymarferion côr a’r maes rygbi.

BIOGRAPHY
I’m Art and Design Teacher from Tregaron. I am primarily a Printmaker but use several different techniques in my work including charcoal drawing, oil painting and mixed media. Although my themes vary, the influence of my strong Welsh heritage is paramount. I depict the Welsh people of rural Ceredigion, male voice choirs and rugby. I love producing the work and am always pleased when people feel they can relate to the pictures. The images are a celebration of Wales as I see it today and stem from my own personal experiences in the rural hinterland, in choral performances and on the rugby field.

Great exhibition up at Bronglais Hospital Dining Room giving you a taste of all the creative talent within Borth Arts Group….go and see for yourself!

Borth Arts
Borth Arts is a diverse group of artists living and working in Borth and Ynyslas.
Within Borth there have always been many accomplished, practising artists but there had never been a collective of Borth artists exhibiting and performing together. Borth Arts grew out of this desire to promote Borth and Borth artists through joint exhibitions, performances and activities. Consequently, the group was established in February 2016 and then comprised visual artists, a curator, and an administrator.
Over time, the group expanded to fully reflect the whole spectrum of artistic endeavour. Spoken word, drama and music are represented, with members participating in many local events and festivals. The group has widened its scope to include organising and promoting inclusive community events. Borth now has an annual Scarecrow Festival.
The group’s aim is to support artists living and working locally, not only by providing opportunities for exhibiting or performing their work, but also by creating opportunities for the sharing of expertise and the learning of new skills. It believes that arts and culture play an important role in the enrichment and wellbeing of the wider community.

Celf y Borth
Grŵp amrywiol o artistiaid sy’n byw ac yn gweithio yn Borth ac Ynyslas yw Celf Y Borth.
Mae’r Borth bob amser wedi bod yn gartref i nifer o artistiaid talentog ond ni fu erioed gasgliad o artistiaid y pentref yn arddangos ac yn perfformio gyda'i gilydd. Tyfodd Celf Y Borth o'r awydd hwn i hyrwyddo artistiaid Borth a’r pentref ei hun trwy arddangosfeydd, perfformiadau a gweithgareddau ar y cyd. O ganlyniad, sefydlwyd y grŵp ym mis Chwefror 2016 ac ar y pryd, roedd yn cynnwys artistiaid gweledol, curadur a gweinyddwr.
Gydag amser, ehangodd y grŵp i adlewyrchu ymdrechion artistig ar draws y sbectrwm cyfan. Caiff y gair llafar, drama a cherddoriaeth eu cynrychioli, gydag aelodau'n cymryd rhan mewn nifer o ddigwyddiadau a gwyliau lleol. Mae'r grŵp wedi ehangu eu cylch gorchwyl i gynnwys trefnu a hyrwyddo digwyddiadau cymunedol cynhwysol. Mae’r Borth bellach yn cynnal Gŵyl y Bwganod Brain bob blwyddyn.
Nod y grŵp yw cefnogi artistiaid sy’n byw ac yn gweithio’n lleol, nid yn unig trwy ddarparu cyfleoedd i arddangos neu berfformio eu gwaith, ond hefyd trwy greu cyfleoedd i rannu arbenigedd a dysgu sgiliau newydd. Mae’n credu bod y celfyddydau a diwylliant yn chwarae rhan bwysig yng nghyfoethogi a lles y gymuned ehangach.

Opened on the 10th June at Bronglais Hospital Dining room and up until Sept 9th is the ‘Picturemakers’ exhibition.
Photos with artists Jane Burnham and Greteli Morton and further details below:

SUMMER LIGHT
The Picturemakers / Y Llunwyr
The group was originally formed in 2006 by Prof Alistair Crawford for some of his mid-Wales-based Lifelong Learning students who wished to continue their personal artistic development, facilitated by open, constructive discussion of their work. We have this aim at the heart of all that we do today.
We are individual artists with very different backgrounds and interests, styles of working and use of media, but we make a point of challenging one another periodically to experiment with unfamiliar or long-forgotten techniques and subjects to continually widen our artistic ‘tool-kit’. Our creativity is increased by seeing alternative ways of approaching a common theme, and we find it stimulating to learn from each other’s disparate efforts!
Last year we took part in an experiment that was both artistic and social; a joint project with the aim of making a single artwork comprising a dozen or so individual panels, unified by using a map section of part of Offa’s D**e (the ancient boundary between Wales and England). This was part of the work prepared for our exhibition in October and November of 2023 at the Courtyard in Hereford on the theme of ‘Boundaries’.This major exhibition for the group also included several 4m long banners, painted or stitched by 4 of the members. The banners were hung in the ‘canyon’ and reached from the second to the ground floor of the building.
Please look at our website for examples of work by all our members and contact details too. While we don’t routinely offer Open Studios as part of the Ceredigion Art & Craft Trail, individuals may be approached with a view to that possibility.
Summer 2024 brings us to Bronglais Hospital Aberystwyth’s dining room gallery with an exhibition “Summer Light” to lift the spirits of those who visit.

GOLAU HAF
The Picturemakers / Y Llunwyr
Ffurfiwyd y grŵp yn wreiddiol yn 2006 gan yr Athro Alistair Crawford ar gyfer rhai o'i fyfyrwyr Dysgu Gydol Oes yng nghanolbarth Cymru a oedd yn dymuno parhau â'u datblygiad artistig personol, wedi'i hwyluso gan drafodaeth agored ac adeiladol o'u gwaith. Mae’r nod hwn wrth galon popeth a wnawn heddiw.
Rydym yn artistiaid unigol gyda chefndir a diddordebau gwahanol iawn, arddulliau gweithio a defnydd o gyfryngau, ond rydym yn gwneud pwynt o herio ein gilydd o bryd i’w gilydd i arbrofi gyda thechnegau a phynciau anghyfarwydd neu anghofiedig er mwyn ehangu ein ‘pecyn cymorth’ artistig yn barhaus. . Cynyddir ein creadigrwydd trwy weld ffyrdd amgen o fynd i’r afael â thema gyffredin, ac rydym yn ei chael hi’n ysgogol i ddysgu oddi wrth ymdrechion gwahanol ein gilydd!
Roedd hyn yn rhan o'r gwaith a baratowyd ar gyfer ein harddangosfa yn Hydref a Thachwedd 2023 yn y Courtyard yn Henffordd ar y thema 'Terfynau'. . Cafodd y baneri eu hongian yn y ‘canyon’ a’u cyrraedd o’r ail i lawr gwaelod yr adeilad.
Edrychwch ar ein gwefan am enghreifftiau o waith gan ein holl aelodau a manylion cyswllt hefyd. Er nad ydym fel arfer yn cynnig Stiwdios Agored fel rhan o Lwybr Celf a Chrefft Ceredigion, mae’n bosibl y byddwn yn cysylltu ag unigolion gyda golwg ar y posibilrwydd hwnnw.
Bydd Haf 2024 yn dod â ni i oriel ystafell fwyta Ysbyty Bronglais Aberystwyth gydag arddangosfa “Golau’r Haf” i godi ysbryd y rhai sy’n ymweld.
