Feeding a horse correctly starts with understanding its basic needs. The feeding pyramid brings structure to the ration — from absolute necessities to targeted fine-tuning.

The foundation of everything. A horse drinks around ±30 litres per day. Without sufficient water, no horse can function properly.
2️⃣Roughage
Hay, grass, alfalfa… Roughage forms the basis of the ration and provides fibre, energy through fermentation, microbiome support and gastric protection.
3️⃣Concentrates
A complement to roughage when roughage alone is not sufficient. Provides energy, protein, and essential vitamins and minerals.
4️⃣Supplements
The final step. Used to support specific needs, but never to replace the basics.

During the final months, a pregnant mare’s condition can change quickly. Aim for a BCS of 5–6 and adjust in time.

As the foal grows, there is less space in the abdomen. Several small meals support digestion and improve the mare’s comfort.

Always provide sufficient, high-quality roughage. It supports gut health and helps keep energy levels stable.
