Abbeyfield South Downs

Abbeyfield South Downs Safe, sociable retirement homes to rent across East Sussex and Kent. Enjoy an independent life. Today, there are hundreds of Abbeyfield properties nationwide.

The Abbeyfield Society was founded by Richard Carr-Gomm in 1956 to alleviate loneliness among older people who were living unsupported and with little contact with others. Some are managed centrally by the National Society, but most are managed by individual independent Abbeyfield member societies. Abbeyfield South Downs is one such society; a merger of former smaller member societies which have joined together to benefit from shared expertise and efficiencies.

Our tenants wanted to do something nice for someone else in the run up to Christmas, at our Beachside House.

As part of their festive activities, Dumelm have a scheme involving a Delivering Joy Christmas tree. The scheme involves giving a gift to someone in your community who might otherwise go without this Christmas. Dunelm's "Delivering Joy" campaign works by allowing customers to fulfill specific Christmas gift requests for people in need within their local community.
Customers take a gift request tag from a tree in-store, purchase or make the requested item, and return it to the store by the specified deadline. Dunelm then organizes the gifts for delivery to partner charities, schools, and care homes in time for Christmas.

Self-care isn’t just about vitamins or exercise — it’s also about kindness, connection, and joy.

For many older adults, retirement can feel quiet, and loneliness can sometimes creep in. Here are Abbeyfield South Downs we have ending loneliness at the heart of all we do. Our houses hold coffee mornings, exercise classes, film clubs, invite guest speakers in, animal visitors and volunteers such as a Touch of Gentleness and host a wide range of clubs and activities. This week is self care week and so we are sharing some small steps that can lift your wellbeing:

✨ Call or visit a friend — even 10 minutes of laughter makes a difference.
✨ Join a local group, class, or coffee morning — connection is important.
✨ Move your body gently — a short walk, some stretches, or even dancing in your living room!
✨ Nourish yourself with good food and water — your body deserves care.
✨ Make time for hobbies that bring you joy — knitting, gardening, painting, music, reading.

This Self-Care Week, let’s remind ourselves that looking after our hearts and minds is just as important as looking after our health. You matter. If you are feeling lonely, reach out to one of our staff and if you are not a tenant at our houses or Holdenhurst- remember that Silverline is a 24 hour service that is there to offer support for older adults.

Share your favourite self-care tip in the comments — you might inspire someone else today.

As we get older, it’s common for our hearing to change, but that doesn’t mean you have to struggle in silence. Many people experience hearing loss gradually, and it can affect how we connect with friends, family, and the world around us.

Here’s what to know:
🔹 Hearing loss is very common in later life.
🔹 It can make conversations harder, cause tiredness or frustration, and sometimes even impact confidence.
🔹 There’s lots of support—from hearing tests and hearing aids to simple changes at home that make a big difference.

If you or someone you care about is finding it harder to hear, don’t wait. Getting help early can make life brighter and more connected. 🌟

There is lots of helpful advice on the Age UK website:

Hearing loss affects 1 in 5 adults in the UK. Age UK provides information and advice on common hearing problems and hearing aids.
