Today, 11 of our staff members attended Oliver McGowan Training, continuing to build their knowledge and commitment to inclusive, person-centred support.

A special thank you to two of the people we support, Elly and Eliza, who were part of the training as Experts with Lived Experience. Your voices, insights, and experiences make such a powerful difference in helping others learn and grow. 👏💙

As Neurodiversity Week comes to a close, we celebrate the brilliance, creativity, and strength in every neurodivergent mind 🧠✨

Different ways of thinking aren’t deficits — they’re perspectives that shape a richer, more inclusive world 🫶

Here’s to embracing differences, challenging stereotypes, and continuing the conversation beyond this week 💛

✨The Oliver McGowan story is vital to our community. Oliver was a young man whose life was tragically cut short after his needs weren’t understood in healthcare settings. His legacy now drives the national push for better training, respect, and truly person centred care ✨

We are proud to work alongside Autism Somerset CIC and have several people delivering Oliver McGowan Training as Experts with Lived Experience. They share why they wanted to get involved:

💜Eliza: I started being an Autistic Expert about 18 months ago. I applied for the job because I feel it's important to advocate for myself and others that might not be able to advocate for themselves. The training is very important because there are many barriers for autistic individuals that try and access the health and care sector.
The training will improve the lives of autistic people.

💜Elly: I am an Expert with lived experience for Autism Somerset. Autism affects me daily. I have been treated the same as Oliver McGowan in the past. Sadly, he died and I survived. I wanted to tell people about autism so I can change lives for the better. I don’t like low flying helicopters, loud sirens, fires and muck from farmers.

Deanna, one of our Registered Managers, shares another aspect of her lived experiences:

I’m a mum to an incredible five-year-old boy who is autistic and nonverbal. He attends a specialist school and experiences ARFID, sensory processing difficulties, and sometimes self-injurious behaviours, which can make daily life challenging at times. He relies heavily on routine and objects of reference, so we often structure our days around what helps him feel safe, regulated, and understood 🫶

He experiences the world in his own unique way, and being his mum has completely changed how I see things. It’s taught me patience, flexibility, and how to slow down and notice the little moments that really matter. While there are definitely tough days, there is also so much joy. 🥰 His laugh is unbelievably infectious, he loves orchestral music, and his favourite cartoon is Hey Duggee. He brings so much love and light into our family, and we are endlessly proud of the amazing little boy he is. We truly love him to pieces 💙

Deanna, one of our Registered Managers, shares her lived experience being Neurodiverse 🫶

I have ADHD, and it affects a lot of my day-to-day life, including how I work. My brain can feel a bit like a sieve, so I write everything down to keep myself on track. I can actually be very organised, but inside my head things can sometimes feel quite chaotic. Patience and the occasional reminder from people around me genuinely helps more than people probably realise 😊

I also find it hard to just sit and do nothing, so I’m usually moving or keeping my hands busy. At work I often have fidget tools nearby, and at home I’m usually running around after my kids. When I do get a quiet moment, I love knitting, crocheting, and other crafty things. They help keep my hands busy and my brain a little calmer 🧘‍♀️

❌ Myth: People with autism cannot show empathy ❌

Many autistic individuals feel empathy deeply, notice subtle emotional shifts, and are powerful advocates for others. Differences in communication—like avoiding eye contact, withdrawing when overwhelmed, or having a neutral expression—can be misunderstood as coldness, even when they care a lot.

Others may express empathy very openly, sharing their own experiences to connect and support.

Empathy isn’t absent in autism—it’s just expressed in diverse ways 💕

✨One of our lovely people we support J shares his experience with being Neurodiverse:

At school, a long time ago I got picked on. I was told I was mental, because they asked me to pull silly faces, which made me feel I was being childish.
I know it was, because of my autism, which caused me to go to the loo a lot during lesson time. I also got teased for my epilepsy as well. I ended up having to leave schools and start a new one.

J is open about his past experiences and is proud of what he has achieved.
J is supported daily by You First Support Services and he is a very busy and active member of his community! J volunteers at a local charity shop, goes to church each Sunday and is a keen gardener! 🌷
